Longboard skateboarders, that is, not surfers.
I'm toying with the idea of starting, since trick skating doesn't seem to be working out for me despite the time I dedicate to it.

That, and longboarding just looks much more relaxing and comfortable.

DO IT!
I've been longboarding for a good 3 years, best time of my life. I'd recommend starting with some flat-land carving then moving on to the hills.

PS: If you want the best boards and gear check out 'Original Skateboards'. I highly recommend
them.

So you'd recommend it over trick-skating, anyway? I'd probably need to make my own deck. Only parts I'd buy would be the wheels and a set of bearings.

Just looks like a beautiful sport..

Yeah its tricker to start with but once you have the basics down its relativly easy from there.
And on the buliding a board, I'd say a better option is buy a full board of the internet as a starting board then after 3-6 months start to change parts and just mix it up from there.

Money issues. I know a carpenter, so I think it's just a matter of getting the right wood and cutting it to a template. Not sure how much the width of the trucks matters, to start with anyway. I know wider is better for downhill because it's more stable..

Never liked the idea of buying completes. There's a childlike Lego-esque joy to tinkering around with a board..
