There are games that are good, and there are games that are great. Then there are the games that become permenantly engraved in socioty and culture. Some oldies include doom, donkey kong, megaman, pac man, resident evil, silent hill and many more.

I want to know if there is any recent games (within the 21st milennea) that have such effect. One that I know of is Bioshock. Its the only game that made me genuinly, pants crappingly scared, not that "jump-out-and-yell-boo" suprised that I get, but suspense and total fear of the unknown. And the story was fan-fucking-tastic and totally caught me off gaurd.
especially the part where it turns out my only buddy Atlas was Frank Fontain and i was under mind control, I was flabberghasted to say the least.

Half-life is another one, More for the game itself but the story aint half bad either.

to tell you the truth, Im looking to make a list of what games to buy before they become another scratch in history.

Warcraft 3 was classic before it even hit the shelves. Same with SC2.

And WoW will be in children's history books in 50 years.
idk i think WC3 will be eclipsed in most peoples minds when SC2 comes out(were not talking great games, were talking iconic games that people will remember for decades, like pac-man and doom), which brings me to my second point: this century. its blizzard, and it hasnt been released yet, unless you work at blizzard and are from the future, its a bit early to be saying that.

Halo 1 maybe, but I still hope Halo 3 will be one of those things in like 10 or 20 years that people say "I cant believe we thought that was actually cool"

I haven't played it myself, but I think EVE Online would be a fair candidate. The first game where large scale criminality is legally condoned. [http://eve.klaki.net/heist/] For those of you who haven't heard of this (it has been mentioned on the Escapist before), you should read it, it's really quite interesting.

Can't believe someone hasn't said it... revolutionized fighting games and started a trend of violence that isn't done yet.

I would say the Sims. It was original and its been a hit, I think that qualifies as a classic.

GTA for being the first to turn mainstream games into giant playgounds and have it have huge sussess

Team Ico's games, for raw emotional depth

Baldur's Gate 2 and KOTOR are widely considered among the best RPGs ever made. Planescape: Torment was released in December of 1999, so I'm not sure if it counts.

Wii Sports has become the new PONG for all the casual retards. Also Guitar Hero and Rock band.

EDIT: My 21st centuary classic would be Mario64 but I fear it isn't being played by the massess on their mobile phones and therefore cant be regarded as such!

Guitar Hero/ Rockband, Bioshock, The Sims and a great deal of Valve stuff like Half Life/Portal/TF2(I think it breathed fresh air into the lungs of online FPS imo).
