Any open world/sanbox martial arts games? Not Jade Empire

Pretty straightforward, I'm playing Ghost of Tsushima, and enjoying it, but I'm finding myself really wanting to play a similar open world game, but where you do hand to hand martial arts, instead of swords and bows.

Doesn't have to be asian culture oriented, or fuedal japan or anything specific like that. I'm perfectly happy with some cyberpunk future alien world thing where you wander an alien landscape, and punch things in the face with magical martial arts or whatever. It's just...I find myself wanting the "wandering warrior" vibe of Ghost of Tsushima, but the combat mechanics of mystical kung fu, or something similar.

But I can't think of any games even remotely like this, other than Jade Empire, which I already own. So, basically "Like Jade Empire but...." kind of games, if any. Open world, wandering combat, fist/foot punching instead of sword stabby slash slash.

Any suggestions?

Sleeping Dogs, if you're into Hong Kong action movies kind of vibe.

It's seriously one of the most unique open world games ever made. And it's awesome.

Like Yakuza?
They're open world? They seemed really linear to me from the admittedly limited exposure to those games I've had.

Yeah I do have Sleeping Dogs, I honestly forgot about that one. I bought it on sale like a year or 2 ago, and it's just collected digital dust. I started playing it recently, but just sort of lost interest. That is the kind of vibe I'm looking for though.

Any other suggestions? I've got Sleeping Dogs, thanks for that reminder, and I'll look at Yakuza, I'm curious about any other similar ones out there.

Yes. At certain story points you get constrained to special areas, but most of the time you can walk around and do whatever you want.

Yakuza 0, and Kiwami 1 and 2 are on Steam. I recommend them all.

I guess I just get tricked by the literal alleyways, corridor look of pretty much every scene I've ever seen of that series. It's always "him running down a narrow alley/street", it felt like those games that literally stick you on a path without any real option of where to go.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
There is Overgrowth, that seems to be open world.

River City Girls/Kunio-kun Franchise are all open world brawlers. Only some of the early games are completely linear. Most of the spin-off don't count as they are usually completely different games.

that does look interesting, added to wishlist.\

Urban setting, but yeah open world. Here's a gameplay vid (fight at 2:10).

I'll add those. I think the other issue for me personally was they seem to just be too....japanese nuts for my tastes. Like, I appreciate comedy, and goofy, insane shit, but to a point. But the Yakuza franchise just seems to strip naked, snort 30 lines of cocaine at mach 3, then go diving off of a skyscraper into a missile silo full of tapioca pudding and catgirls, while singing karaoke badly...while wearing an eyepatch.....and sparkles...and a unicorn in the background. Basically I'm saying their fucking insane, and I usually have an upper limit on my batshit fucking insane-o-meter, and Yakuza always seems to just spike that shit so hard it breaks the meter. So they were never an immediate draw for me.

I might try this game again personally, now that I found out there's an offline mode.

Absolver: Downfall

In fact, after looking at this "New" trailer (an update when I stopped playing the game), I started downloading it again.

Hey, sidebar. how do you do that unfurl url hyperlink thing?

I think it works by directly copy-pasting a url into the field vs using "insert link" from the toolbar. Tho it doesn't seem to work with all url's.

For example, copy-pasting directly turns it into the unfurl thing:

While using "insert link" results in this:

I was probably one of them during the day. I disliked the always online thing and the rest. But I'm downloading it again on steam. I'll play a couple of hours and give an idea later.

Don't you also get to punch out a tiger in one the games?

I mean, I guess I could try that in real life, but I'm banned from the Zoo for life. Totally has nothing to do with giving firecrackers to the chimps because I would never do that a second time. at all

It's an oldie but a goodie; Sleeping Dogs. (it apparently got a definitive edition port for ps4, it was originally a ps3 game, I did not know that, I might end up checking this out myself again haha)

The game is about chinese mafia, it's kinda like a yakuza/gta type of setting but with kung fu fighting as the focus, really cool gameplay and it is almost entirely hand to hand fighting. It feels kinda like playing a classic Jackie Chun film, in the best way possible.

Yep, I own that one already. Played it a bit earlier this year, but sort of lost focus on it. Not sure why.

Aww and here I thought I pulled out some arcane wisdom haha. But yeah game is a ton of fun and you don't get many open world games set in hong kong so it always had a spot in my heart. Now to think of something else like it...hmm...ever try Akiba's Trip 2? It's more of an Arpg with a limited open world than something like a GTA and it has a persona kind of theme full of anime culture references but the combat is really cool. It's more of the sort of combat that parodies famous martial arts properties more so than being a serious one itself though, which fits the game as it is one about having to wrestle vampires out of their clothing so that the sun will burn them lol.
