Witcher 2 has very good sword play and it's a bonus if you enjoy a mature and deep RPG story.

If you are looking only for sword play I recommend you try the remake of Shadow Warrior. The sword play of that game is the icing and the cake. I finished the game only with my sword and using weapons only when needed (like bosses).
Oh! I was wrong about my first statement. I am glad for that.

Well Dishonored has some pretty decent swordplay... so long as you don't mind getting the "bad" ending

Witcher 2 seems pretty good as well, but I haven't played it much

There's the Ninja Gaiden series as well, but I remember the third one being crap, and the first two are getting hard to find if you're on console.

Hope that helps

As for my favourite sword, I'm gonna go go with "Umbra" from Oblivion, looked awesome, and it was pretty much the best sword in the game as far as base damage went.

As for best sword, Carsomyr from Baldur's Gate 2 comes to mind, pity only Paladins can wield it.
Assassins (maybe other thieves, don't remember, but definitely assassins) can use it with their high level perk that lets them use weapons without restriction. Really, really hilarious.

I'll second the Dishonoured suggestions. The swordplay in that is pretty decent, a shame doing it makes you morally detestable apparently.

Risen has pretty awesome swordplay, because its tough as balls n the early stages, i haven't played risen 2 yet, but it might also be worth a look. Sword of the samurai 2 on PS2 is pure swordplay porn, fights can end in a single move.

Well, of the hack and slashes Ninja Gaiden is surely the one to go with.

Since you mentioned Dark Souls, I would recommend the Artorias DLC if you havent played it just because the Artorias battle itself is one of the best boss battles in the series and a sword wielding one to boot.

As an overall game based around lots and lots of swords with different stances and move sets Way of the Samurai is clearly leaps and bounds above everything else. (3 or 4, no matter. 4 has a bigger world and story whereas 3 has more humor)

Are you talking specifically about just hack n' slash or are you speaking specifically about having an intricate system of sword fighting? One would include just about every hack n' slash game like say, Hundred Years of War while the other would actually be a pretty short list. (Especially if fighting games are off the table)
I'm looking for something more along the lines of an intricate system. I usually don't play fighting games, but I'm open to trying them.

If you have a PS2 you might want to check Shinobido: Way of the ninja. It's the best ninja game ever made, and swords fighting is awesome. You can't just go around murdering everybody. It takes practice and tactical approach. Ubisoft should take a hint or two from that game and incorporate some of it's combat aspects into Assassin's Creed if you ask me.

In that case, way of the samurai series would be a good place to start. The game is single player, and still leans more on the fighting game side, but it has a fairly detailed fighting system.

Though, nothing really beats Soul Calibur in that regard. (Since it IS a game that is built on the idea of gladiatorial combat)

Uh, I think Shadow Warrior does it pretty well, I played it when I was visiting my friend, and the katana is pretty sweet to use.

Also, it is entirely possible to finish the game by only using the katana(it has a projectile attack(No, not the shurikens)).

Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lkE0yhke_tM] (best goddamned lightsaber combat ever, I mostly prefer Jedi Academy's one since it's basically the same as Jedi Outcast's but upgraded, and multiplayer is hella' fun)
definitely this, i didn't play it until YEARRSSSS after it had came out, and the combat held up extremely well, it's fucking ridiculous how interesting/good the lightsaber combat is.

I'd agree with Way of the Samurai, and the first one at least did have a multiplayer mode as well. I only played a bit of the second one and none after that so I can't speak to their quality. But the original was great, had tons of unique swords with different move sets, and very much required the player to appropriately anticipate and react to attacks in order to become very good at it.

It could be quite unforgiving playing against someone who'd never played it as a result. I remember talking with a friend about how awesome it was, but when we finally sat down and played it I utterly destroyed him because he'd never played and I knew how to counter everything he tried.

For something different I will say Shinobi on the ps2 because it is just fun.

But seriously, Ninja Gaiden Black.

I will say that the Witcher 2 really doesn't have that great of swordplay, it is average. Frankly, it can be a little frustrating in a bad way. But I will still play the shit out of it, because the story is great.

The best swordplay in a game I've played has to go to Red Steel 2 for the Wii.
Excellent game albeit to hard for me to beat.

Any of the NES Ninja Gaiden games are a lot of fun but probably aren't quite what you're looking for since there's no block/parry. He just happens to use a sword as his primary attack. Loved beating those game as a kid with plenty of time on his hands, lol.

Any and all of the Ninja Gaiden games...ok, except 3. Razor's edge is ok, but go with the earlier ones.

Also, dragon's dogma has excellent combat. I like playing as an archer, but the fighter class has sword and shield.

I hate you, I was literally thinking "oh hey I have something I can contribute to this until I saw you, the LAST REPLY in my search to make sure it hadn't been pointed out already.

But yeah, Dragon's Dogma is probably my favorite rpg at the moment, the combat is just fantastic.

Also I would recommend Lord of the Rings: War in the North. Great game with very seamless combat that transitions from melee to ranged without any hitches. ( on the pc you may have to run it in a fake windowed mode due to some weird optimization issue) I would recommend playing it co-op, but it isn't required by any means.

Favorite sword is a tough one, While I definitely love Red Queen and Rebellion from devil may cry, I have to say I like any ornate straight edged sword. Something that looks like a weapons a knight would wield or an excalibur type deal. THings like astora's stright sword from dark souls or chrysamere from the elder scrolls.
