I think that's a Batman cape sound, popularized by the caped crusader and made to have similar occurrances with anyone trying to be cool with a cape or even a longcoat.

I've been making music for over 15 years and collected sound effects for about as long and I've never thought about that one. It might be one of the old Batman (1966?1968) sound effects stated above, which can probably be found in the "20th Century Fox (Television)" sound library but maybe you can find it in the BBC library aswell.

But it's a rather generic sound so it can probably be replicated easily. It might not be just one and the same sound you have heard throughout time aswell? Anyways, It would probably also be easy to replicate with either a long, wide and medium thickness cloth (1 meter long, 30-50 cm wide and 2-4 mm thick) or you could record wind hitting a open fire, one about 20x20 cm large so that the flame itself doesn't make too much a sound. You could probably be able to combine the cloth AND fire to make one huge sweeping sound! ;)

Cheers.

i found a video of magic carpet on you tube and as it happens this sound is the very first thing you hear as the video starts

that must date back around 25 years.

and you will probably start to notice it all the time now like i do , i mean it seriously turns up everywhere its almost rare to see a movie go by and not here it and its all over tv.

it could be a different sound im not much of an expert and my hearing isnt great but they all sound the same to me and as its so prevalent i was thinking maybe it was on some basic starter pack industry standard foley set or something.

Yeah, that sound I remember. I believe it's a flame sound, either some sort of flame thrower effect or just general "burning really, really fast" sound. I'm not sure if it's an old sound or if it was edited to sound more 'computer'ish' later on, can't say I'm that good with sound history other than hearing the sounds themselves and trying to remember where it was from.

Closest I could find on the internet was this sound but I didn't listen to all 600 flame sounds so it might be there somewhere hehe.

Ohh and don't worry, I'm rather thick skinned about overused sound effects. So far the only effect that I find annoying is the Wilhelm collection, but I still have alot of years on me to dislike other effects. *Shudders*

Cheers.
