I guess you have been a bit segregated from gaming news of late... Lucas Arts and BioWare have announced Star Wars: The Old Republic. Instead of making KOTOR 3, they have decided that it would be best to make an MMO. There are various feelings and opinions on this, but for the most part, the people that really enjoyed KOTOR 1/2 are quite pissed off (such as myself). Basically, it feels like Lucas selling out once again.

So, instead of getting to focus on a new and enthralling storyline, and your character's participation within it, you get to grind. And then read a little bit of dialogue pertaining to a storyline. And then grind some more. It's going to be set 300 years AFTER the events of KOTOR 2, and I have a horrible feeling that nothing will ever be properly explained.

The excuses provided for such treachery? They said they felt that making it an MMO gave them the opportunity to make not only KOTOR 3, but KOTOR 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, etc...

To which I say, "I DON'T WANT KOTOR SEVENTEEN!"

It's an MMO

it's already been announced

apparently it's being made by Bioware.

They're also making their next IP, some Dragon Gate game, that I will definitely pick up for the 360 on name value alone..

Not that interested in the KOTOR MMO though, and as it is being put together by Bioware, rather then Obsidian and it's an MMO, and I'm pretty sure takes place in a different time frame entirely to the original KOTOR games, it will not resolve the "cliffhanger" at the end of KOTOR 2.

They also planned to make Mass Effect into a trilogy, so I'm looking forward to that, although I haven't heard any word.. Don't Screw Me on this Drew Karpyshan

Obisidan entertainment developed Kotor 2 so if there is a sequel they will make it not Bioware.

Lucas Arts owns the rights to KOTOR, Obsidian just babysat for Bioware because they were.. I don't know, probably making Jade Empire

Obsidian is actually the leftovers from Black Isle when Interplay disbanded the company..

If Bioware pawns Mass Effect onto Obsidian, I will cry.

Neverwinter Nights 2, Obsidian, KOTOR 2, Obsidian..

grr..

you hit the nail on the head, although obsidian developed it at the request of bioware, so it's logical to conclude(at least for me) that if bioware is busy making the MMO, obisidan could be developing kotor 3.

I'm just crossing my fingers that

1) Bioware doesn't forget about it's old IPs, like Jade Empire and Mass Effect
2) This new IP they're making is good

it still says so in their Wikipedia page

but I don't really care for Obsidian. Maybe now that they have the guy from "Icewind Dale Fame" (again, Wikipedia) they'll put out something good, or at the very least, finished.

KOTOR and NWN2 were neither finished, and due to that, not particularly good..

Although KOTOR2 did have the influence system, which I hope would be added upon and used as industry standard because it was awesome.

I hope Bioware DOESN'T make KotOR III, as they are pwned by EA and the PC version will have install limits. FAILED. Bioware may as well have gone out of business.

Obsidian did a good job on what they were *able* to finish, but Luca$ rushed them for the holiday release and as a result it wasn't finished. I hope Luca$ gives whoever gets the IP a chance to finish this time.

And the influence system didn't really *do* anything other than change a few lines of dialogue. It should alter quests and give different endings to various parts of the game, and really change the character's behavior (even if it is scripted). Besides, KotOR II's characters and story were flat by comparison to KotOR I's, and would be even if it were finished.

Bioware always pawns projects it's too busy to do off on Obsidian. Insert the dissapinting pile of shit that was NWN2.

Sigh... We can only hope that never happens again.

Eh, I don't think so, it just felt like none of the characters were really *finished*. Atton and Kreia were really quite fascinating, but they were also the only characters that got any intro time. The first area in KotOR II was fantastic, but after that things just gradually petered out until it felt like someone had charged into the development area and yelled "QUICK! TIE EVERYTHING OFF SO WE CAN PUT THIS IN A BOX!!!!"

"But we're not even sure where we're going with some of this stuff!!"

"Then pretend it didn't happen! But HURRY!!!!"

the ending was particularly unfinished.

And you know that mission where you split up, and your main team goes into the temple and your recon team does some other stuff?

while, during that quest I actually encountered a playtest message.

It said something similar to; "If you see this message, please contact Dave so he can sort it out"

I was just like "who the fuck is dave?!"

You know, I always thought the gameplay in KOTOR would fit better as an MMO to begin with. The combat seemed so MMOish and the storyline was pretty basic. It doesn't surprise me that 3 is going to be an MMO.

Lol, I had consistent difficulty with the cut-scenes not working the first time you're supposed to go meet Astrid at the Secret Jedi Academy. There was a conflict with the first alignment-triggered movie and the one for entering the bunker after the fight with the three HK's. I'd wind up just inside the bunker with Kreia and Atton standing next to my character (they were SUPPOSED to be in containment), and if you clicked on them it'd say something like "CHEAT NODE: 1.) SKIP TO ASTRID MEETING 2.) SKIP TO KREIA DIALOG 3.) NOTHING"

That game was messed up.
