I came across those videos a while back and downloaded the Composer... of course I didn't make it past replicating the first few notes of Blind Guardian's The Bard's Song before realizing just how lame it was that I was attempting to compose Blind Guardian's The Bard's Song in Mario Paint.
That said there are quite a few Mario Paint videos across the Tubes that are truly impressive wastes of time.
Anything can be a massive waste of time if you put it like that...like BEING ON THIS FORUM!!!...ok bad example but some peeps like to compose music and this a free and easy way to do it(most actually music composing programs can get pretty expensive from what ive seen)
Trust me, I'm not one to bash wastes of time-- I spent 6 hours yesterday designing a character for a pen and paper campaign. And, like I said, some of that stuff is really impressive. But while I was working with the Composer I realized, wow, I'm dragging airplanes and hearts onto a musical score...
There are actually quite a few free music composers scattered here and there (I myself use LSDJ and Anvil). The MP Composer is a really neat thing to play with and certainly brings me back to my old days playing the actual SNES game, but if you are actually serious about making music I would recommend looking into something other than Mario Paint.
