Anyone else disappointed by Fringe?

So there I was two weeks ago on Tuesday sitting down to watch this new show, Fringe. I figured it would be good, it was written by JJ Abrams, writer of Lost, which while it confuses to hell out of me still manages to be a good show.
So the show came on, and to my surprise: It sucked ass, there were no good actors, the characters weren't likeable, all the jokes fell flat and it wasn't that exciting. So I sat down last night to give it one more chance, sucked more than the premier, anyone else disappointed by this new show?

Fringe will always be compared to the X-Files and frankly the X-Files is an act that can't be followed. Yes I know they went WTF in the final seasons but they also had episodes like X-COPS which set the bar to high.

I rather enjoyed the Fringe Festival actually, I saw The Musicals of Musicals: The Musical and it was- Oh, you mean the television show.

Well, it was sort of well edited when I turned it on, so I kept it on. The female lead is quite a good actress I think, and I like her, but she has no character. None of them have characters except for the crazy guy, and his feels so insincere and cliched. The directing isn't very good, and it's basically every television drama wrapped up together. You got your cops, your scientists, your doctors, all together on one tiny team dealing with 'mysterious' issues. Yeah, I don't think I'll catch it again. Especially with the ending to the episode I watched.

hehehe...hahaha...BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
I'm sorry, but I just couldn't hold it in. JJ Abrams is a man too taken by his own cleverness to make a good story. His only good offerings were Alias and Lost before it was clear he was making things up as they went.

I'm glad you said that because my version probably would have sounded mean.

I'm not comparing fringe to the x files because I have never seen an episode of the x files, fringe just sucks. The acting is bad, and the plot line is worse. It's just weird is all it is, and it's not even the good type of weird where you're interested because it's weird. It's just weird and stupid.

You mean I was being helpful while also (finally) venting my spleen on JJ? Bonus points for me.

Musical the Musical was okay; the true gem was the Cody Rivers show.

This is the main reason I stay away from TV nowadays: There's nothing good anymore. And I'm not talking like, "I watched Saturday morning cartoons when I was a kid and liked them," good, I'm talking Firefly [http://www.tv.com/Firefly/show/7097/summary.html] good. Truly good shows tend to run one or two seasons and get taken off of the air.

That said, I like to get a few opinions on a show before deciding whether or not to watch it. Given that I respect a good deal of the opinions on these forums, I thank you all for your contribution to the hours of the day I can now spend on something else.

Unless they're Babylon 5, in which case they squeak through with 5 seasons and no one remembers how damn good the show was. Lost could have learned a lot from this show, two important points being:
1)J Michael Straczynski had the basic plot arc of the entire series mapped out from day one. He left himself a lot of wriggle room but it was clear in every episode that he knew where he was going. It's ok to be a show like, say, House, where you're really just meandering around but some overarching plot arcs as a nod to continuity. If, however, you're selling your show as going places, like Lost did, then you'd better damn well know where those places are.
2)Explain as many mysteries as you raise, and do it before people have forgotten those mysteries altogether. This doesn't mean you can't hold your cards tightly to your chest (for example, Babylon 5 had a time travel plot that began in season 1 and was only properly explained in season 3) but those cards had better be mighty intriguing. And you'd better not be playing poker with eleventy billion cards because you refused to discard any. Damn, that metaphor really grew.
In short, answer the questions you got people asking - not the ones they didn't even know about.

Oh, and, this guy:

is an interesting character.
This guy:

is a cliche.

i actually like fringe. it's definately one of the better shows on tv at the moment.

i mean we could do be doing a lot worse than fringe, the only real downside it has is it's on fox, which means it will be time slotted to death and then cancelled

@ Saskwach: Yeah, Lost always had the problem that they couldn't keep their story interesting while explaining mysteries, so they don't, Heroes and some other shows don't have that problem.

I've only seen part of the first episode. I'll give the series a few more chances to clear out all the exposition before making a final decision, but so far I think the pilot is pretty blah. It certainly hasn't hooked me like a good pilot should.

The season opener of House was pretty good though.

I like the show, but knowing that Fox has a tendency to cancel most series after six episodes or less, i don´t think Fringe is going to last much longer.

Fringe is one of those shows that I'll watch but only if there's nothing better to do or on TV. I personally didn't really care for it, the overall show seemed scattered and confusing.
