Now, it may just be my internet's a bit of a crock, but for about 15 minutes or so there, I think the whole site actually crashed! Are there really that many people on here now? Was the escapist hacked! Or was it just some minor maintenance and nothing to worry about? I don't know really, although I was getting an error about a sixpack......

At least from my place the escapist is laggy and/or unresponsive on a regular occasion. I put it down to bandwidth/processing costs. Virgil and team do a great job of keeping it up so I think most of us are either with a life (not me) or just deal with it.

Be happy for the crash, it shows the escapist pulls enough of a crowd to give those people whatever royalties they get (if any).

Another website I'm part of had a spectacular crash when something went wrong at the server which caused an explosion which blew down three walls. It was epic.

Well, at least its nice to know I'm not crazy. I have noticed that there are a couple little aftershock freezes, but on the whole, its back up and running. Anyways, if this is the time for regular maintenance, it probably means I should be getting the heck to bed.

Wait... that sounds familiar. I'm pretty durn certain I heard that somewhere, though IIRC the site that blew was not one I was affiliated with in any way. I think I heard it from someone else affiliated with said website. Or possibly another site on the same server.

On the other hand, I somehow doubt they thought so. They being whoever runs the site/happened to be near the server at the time of the exploding.
No-one was injured, though the site was down for ages.

The server hired out, so it could have been just about anything.

Pics or it didn't happen.

I go to supreme amounts of effort just to ignite my harddisks in the event of... certain emergency conditions. Having a server explode and take out three walls is... difficult to believe.

Even triggering the batteries in a UPS for a shared hosting joint shouldn't do that.

So pics please! If for no other reason than I'm damned curious.

June 03 2008 - Explosion!

Apologies for the downtime - there was an explosion in the data-center. Nobody was injured, no servers were damaged, no data was lost, but the power was broken. There will be a few hours more downtime next weekend as well, as the emergency backup power is switched over back to mains power.

All active quests have been extended 72 hours to make up for lost time. (Edit: and another 72 hours after the second outage. Idle vampires have also had their idle timeout reset, so there should be no unusual deletions.)

The explosion was caused by a short-circuit in some high-capacity wiring - it knocked down three walls.

If any donations were made that haven't been properly processed, contact me with the Paypal transaction ID and I'll sort it out.

Aye, this happened to me, yesterday about the same time as well.
I figured it was just my shitty internet provider.

I'd managed to write out a reply of many paragraphs, promptly losing it when the site crashed. D< I'm rather glad it's back up, though, and that there's no news of walls being knocked down by mighty server explosions, haha.

Over the past two years of working for IBM and managing their systems engineers I have never heard of a server actually exploding. Methinks a slight embelishement of the truth has been made. I have seen some impressive things go wrong, and incomprehensively big netowrks go down, but never a server explode. They just smoke and blink out and the fire systems surrounding are usually mind bogglingly clever too.

I still think they mean that something blew/shorted, and popped causing all the damage. I don't think they meant exploded as in exploding as in a birds egg. If it was them fairly do's but reading that makes me think that the short wrecked there server rather than exploding and people were luck yto live.

If there was enough foreign materials in the wall where the short occurred any fire/ignition from the electricity (probably a corrosive action I'm thinking) would have caused a compressed-explosion. Which could have taken out the walls.

But no servers harmed, so no servers exploding. The physics is a little out of my usual experience with electricity (wiring small server rooms and houses and electrocuting myself a lot) but I can see it happening *this way*.
