Cause i feel the fandom seems to be,like at many multifandom cons,i see vendors for anime and such, but i don't see radio comix or sofawolf or other furry comic vendors. So anyone think the furry fandom seems to be snobbed at cons?

Really? I never noticed a distinct lack of furries at what few cons I've been to. Hell, there's usually a furry night or gathering or whatever its called at most of the Cons here is Missouri.

As far as comics, I don't read any so I never noticed a lack of furry.

And to be fair, there certainly are loads of furry centered cons.

It's fairly common knowledge that furrys are one of the few groups that it's okay to exclude because 'they're weird.' That largely covers why they don't show up too often in the more generic cons.

That, and they have their own cons.

I thought the term "furry" didn't refer to a fandom, but rather a sexual preference/fetish. Hence, at any con, porno rules like "nobody under 18" would need to be instated.

I like furry porn. I do. A LOT of furry porn is drawn better then supposed "greats" (LOOKING AT YOU, ANDY WARHOL), but I would HARDly consider myself to be a furry just because it gets me hard.

No, it's anyone who likes anthropomorphized animals. Which include, but is not limited to, those who are into the sexy times.

It is enjoyment of anthromorphized animals. Seems all the PR work by Uncle Kage and such really hasn't been enough on changing minds about the fandom. Kage is the chairperson of furry con in Pittsburgh and he goes to great lengths to put it forth being a fandom. I used to hate him at first myself, but i know he is trying to do what is right for the fandom.

And there has been recent articles about the viewpoint that it being sex being totally wrong.

'Fandom' is not the best word to describe the collective of furries. Unfortunatley 'furry fandom' is the term that stuck. Furries are a subculture rather than a proper fandom.

So pretty much everyone on planet Earth is a furry then?

'Anthropomorphic' refers to an animal with human characteristics or attributes. This means that any animal character that shows any human characteristics is an 'anthro' and liking that character would by apparent definition make one a furry.

This means that if an animal character speaks, for example, it's been anthromorphosized and thus enjoying that character in any capacity makes one a furry.

If someone enjoyed the characters in the Lion King, which has characters that speak and emote in a human-like way, they're a furry by that definition.

While Furry doesn't have any real definition, I have to say I disagree with that one.

OT: I think AccursedTheory is pretty much right. Even in some of the most hard-core fan communities, furries are pretty universally 'the weird ones'.

Of course they get snubbed at conventions. They get snubbed everywhere. They're getting snubbed in these comments right now. Furries are mocked for their interests--which is hilarious, considering the people mocking them and what they enjoy--because the name has basically become another name for just liking anthropomorphic porn. There's a lot more to it, but the outside world refuses to see that. As such, odds are people aren't going to feel as safe selling and expressing themselves at open conventions as other con goers, who like other things, are.

Liana just did an article on this topic:

I'll say it once and very clearly: Pittsburgh fully welcomes the furries' money.

Yup. I was at Pittsburgh and the people there seemed to love the furries, plus the money furry brings to the city of Pittsburgh. Plus many of the people in the city seemed to like it when i dressed up as a fox in fursuit.

It does, but a lot of furries like to pretend otherwise because they're tired of being marginalized.
Is that similar to how people who like anime are actually in it for the hentai and loli's?

This is pure speculation on my part, but could it be the very open/direct sexual connotation to furries compared to other fandoms? I mean, the only context I've ever heard the word "furry" used, is to describe people who derive sexual desire/gratification from having sex with people dressed in animal costumes. Now that might not be the technically accurate description of them, but that's definitely the "person on the street" usage of the word. So I would guess, that people would see them as basically a cluster of people who are one costume away from an orgy, in the middle of their otherwise less sexualized convention? *shrugs* just a theory.

That's a pretty sweet non-sequitur.

There is also this: I don't care to learn the fine distinctions of the subculture of people who dress up in fursuits. Like Bronies, it's a combination of bad press, and total lack of interest from other people to correct any misapprehensions. I think, "Stay away, you creepy guys" is a pretty middle-of-the-road response to be honest.
I think it's this. And there is some good press recently in stuff like the huffington post, buzzfeed, minnesota tribune where furs say that they aren't a fetish, but it isn't enough good press imo. I remember when i was growing up i was interested in Dungeons and dragons, note this was about the 80's and back then people were like,oh you play that evil game? Or don't let him around dungeons and dragons players, they worship the devil and such. But know D&D seems accepted. I think in the future probably furry will be accepted hopefully.

Never met a furry (not an open one, i should say). Never had the chance to bring the iron malice of unfair judgement down upon them. Never watched that terrible CSI episode. People can dress and act whatever way they (legally or...ethically) wish. Would sport's mascots fall under furries? Maybe furry hookers, selling themselves as something they're not? Wonder if any furries drive slowly by night football games, hollering out to the dancing weasel for kicks. Oh dear, what about disneyland? My perception has darkened somewhat more than it ever could for that place.

Anyway, sex gets into everything now...so no matter what hobby or culture you can think of...sex has already infiltrated, mulled about, got bored, went out for drinks, come back and raised kids with it. Yes, even celibacy! So furries shouldn't be any different, just slightly more memorable than most i guess.
