I've wanted to do some gameplay recording for quite a while now but fail at finding a half decent free version. without piracy. There seem to be a crap ton of them out there but finding one which is free and not rubbish seems somewhat tricky, lots of videos on youtube advertising various ones but the videos themselves are absolutely useless (no idea on quality, options, lack of bloatware etc).

Anyone here got experience with any of the free screen capture options out there?
I'd love to be able to use the old free version of gamecam that had no audio but unlimited capture time, but that seems to have vanished and been replaced with a 45second cap.

I tried for a long time to find a good free version. There where ones where you had to use their website for it, no thanks. Others had video but sound. I couldn't find a free fraps.

Any idea of a reasonable one with video but no sound? I can deal with that as long as there's a decent number of options and the capture time's not limited.

XFire has worked fine to me before. The game has to be supported though, but most new games are. My Fallout 3, Far Cry 2 and Psychonauts video on Youtube was shot in Xfire, then edited in other programs. The filesize is of course large at first, due to the fact that it doesn't compress it as you record. But if you upload it to your profile online, it automatically compresses it. The file it creates then can be used for editing.
Xfire also monitors how much you play stuff, if you have it running in the background. Which is kinda scary when it suddenly tells you that you have played over 1000 hours of games...

To get rid of that watermark saying "Unregistered Hypercam 2", I used another video editor (also free) to crop the video. It'll cut out a bit of the game screen, but if that sounds good to you, I'll try to find out which program it was.

I'll have a look at hypercam then, think I've seen it used before, seemed to give out reasonable quality. Thanks!

Xfire [http://www.xfire.com/] allows you to record video for free. I can't comment on the quality of the video, however.

I believe camstudio was the best one i could find. It did in game sound OR microphone IIRC.
