It was a 1980 Western film by Michael Cimino. (Deer Hunter.) Starring Kris Kristofferson and Christopher Walken. It was a catastrophic failure that ruined his career, making 4 million dollars the box office on a 40 million dollar budget. It was almost universally slammed by critics. After a few decades, the film was re-edited and re-released a few times to near-universal acclaim. It was rated by the BBC as the 98th best American film of all time.

So I was wondering whether any of you guys have seen it. I'm planning on picking up the 2012 Director's Cut sometime.

I have! I was lucky enough to catch the reedit in theaters a couple of years ago.

It's probably my favorite film directed by Cimino (though I also really like Thunderbolt and Lightfoot). It looks wonderful, it's got a great cast, a neat dingy atmosphere, cool soundtrack, and its story is compelling. Walken is especially badass in this one.

That said, it is totally excessive. Most scenes really carry on, but it builds a weird universe for itself. It is a movie where a settlement of poor, Eastern European immigrants in the old West own a roller rink to dance around in.

It's definitely worth seeing.

i saw Kingdom of Heaven. That was a pretty good movie, even if it just stole its soundtrack from The 13th Warrior, and equally amazing movie.

I've only seen the original version of it so take everything I say with a grain of salt. Because I don't know if the director's cut done later is any better.

But it was an OK movie that was overly long, kind of pretentious, absolutely beautiful, convoluted, amazingly acted, and very historically inaccurate.

The more recent Cuts might make it a better movie but I can't speak to that. But even the original cut I would say it's worth the watch, but make sure you're ready for a very slow film.

I saw the reedit and thought it was quite good, far cry from "worst movie ever". Some scenes go on forever & for no reason, though.

I only saw the original cut and while I mostly liked the movie, it was too long and confused me on a lot of key issues. I never fully understood what the main conflict was about and I am quite unsure how the movie actually ended :)
