Anyone know anything about CRC errors?

So I bought Anno 1404 gold from Amazon and tried to install it on my main computer. Got a CRC error for data2 and it said the media might be corrupt. I tried it on a different computer and got the exact same error. Then I tried copying the files from the disc to a folder on the desktop and running the installer from there. Exact same error. So I sent it back and got a replacement today. Got the exact same error. CRC error on data2, media corrupt. Tried to install that disc on a third computer, exact same error.
My main computers specs are:
Vista home premium
Intel Core 2 Duo 3.00 Ghz
4 GB ram

I really think I must be missing something here. I find it highly unlikely that I'd get two bad discs in a row, let alone the exact same error. Any ideas?

Wikipedia said:
A cyclic redundancy check (CRC) is an error-detecting code commonly used in digital networks and storage devices to detect accidental changes to raw data. Blocks of data entering these systems get a short check value attached, based on the remainder of a polynomial division of their contents; on retrieval the calculation is repeated, and corrective action can be taken against presumed data corruption if the check values do not match.

CRCs are so called because the check (data verification) value is a redundancy (it expands the message without adding information) and the algorithm is based on cyclic codes. CRCs are popular because they are simple to implement in binary hardware, easy to analyze mathematically, and particularly good at detecting common errors caused by noise in transmission channels. Because the check value has a fixed length, the function that generates it is occasionally used as a hash function. The CRC was invented by W. Wesley Peterson in 1961; the 32-bit polynomial used in the CRC function of Ethernet and many other standards is the work of several researchers and was published during 1975.
Your CD is busted, basically.

EDIT: Sorry, missed the part where you tried two disks.

Anyway, CRC errors usually are NOT found on disc (Or at least not displayed as such). Now that I think about it...

The installer isn't trying to hit the internet, is it?

EDIT: Google says this problem is not unique to you. Apparently, the Anno disk you have is super sensitive and CD drives hate it.

The fixes I see are to fit a new CD-ROM, or try the following.

Create a new folder on the hard drive
Now double click 'My Computer' and right click on the drive with the game
in.
From the menu choose 'Open' , you should now see the contents of the disk.
Now from the menu bar choose 'Edit' --> 'Select All' and then 'Edit' -->
'Copy'
Now open the folder you created and go to 'Edit' -->'Paste' .
You will need to repeat this process for all disks and place them into the
same folder.

Next reboot the computer into windows 'Safe Mode' to do this do the
following:
As soon as the BIOS screen loads, begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard.
Do so until the 'Windows Advanced Options' menu appears.
If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard
error" message. If this happens, restart the computer and try again.
Using the arrow keys on the keyboard, select 'Safe Mode' and then press
Enter.

In Safe Mode run the setup.exe from t
Personally, I'd just make sure you've deleted everything from your previous installs and try again.

Thank you for replying, but I saw that post when I was trying to figure out what was wrong with the first disc. I tried it again just now with the new disc, same error as always. Also I don't think it's connecting to the internet, since safe mode is offline by default and it isn't changing anything.

might want to try creating ISOs of the cds and copying at a slower speed

I agree, as mentioned you could attempt to save and mount or extract the disk and then try an install from there. If you can't get it off you could always download an iso.

Made an iso at the slowest possible speed and ran it from there, still got the exact same error. I guess Ubisoft are just a bunch of incompetent bastards and sent out bad discs. Thanks anyway everyone.

Same problem. I found a solution (didn't work for me) that involves downloading the demo version http://anno.uk.ubi.com/pc/downloads.php#demos , replacing the rda2 file with the one from the demo version, and that should do it. Problem is I cannot see the rda2 file in the demo version. The solution was posted just 2 weeks ago. There might be different demo versions on the download sites, though doesn't seem likely. I downloaded from StrategyInformer.

Side note: When the rda2 error did come up, I clicked on ignore and it completed installation; even got to choose my username and choose Quick Start, but as it's creating the world, and the progress bar is 99.9% complete, it goes no further.

Next stop: the Anno forum. ugh.

I saw that post too, and IIRC I didn't see the file that post was talking about in the demo files either. And I also couldn't replace the entire data2 folder since the demo's was only ~1.5GB and the whole game's data2 is ~4GB. Might be worth trying if you get the CRC error on one of the other files.

To the guy who finds this thread years from now, I wasn't able to find a legitimate solution to this. I have two brand new discs and they just don't work.
