OK, this has been driving me nuts for FAR too long:

Something (I can't remember what) suddenly reminded me of a great movie that I happened to watch on TV about 10 - 15 years ago. I would love to see it again, but I'm having trouble identifying it as I never did find out any of the important details, such as title, actors, director, etc. And to make things worse, I have also forgotten most of the PLOT over the years.

Here is what little I DO remember:

*The movie takes place mostly (entirely?) at night, in city/suburban type environments.

*The hero has been framed for something, and is being pursued by forces largely unknown to him.

*One of the people pursuing the hero, is an FBI agent in an old-fashioned suit and fedora-like hat. He is soon shot dead by the real villain and hidden in the trunk of the hero's car, a stylish 1950s model.

*As the hero (unaware of the corpse in the trunk) drives around trying to figure out what's going on, the blood dripping from his car is noticed and commented on by several random people, but since it's dark and the car is old, everybody just figures it's an oil leak.

*The final Hero vs. Villain fight scene takes place on or near a railway bridge or similar structure. (And/or possibly on top of a moving freight train - my memory is a little blurry here. There is DEFINITELY a freight train somewhere in the scene, though!)

It turns out that the villain is actually the hero's unknown and incredibly evil twin, and that he's planning to switch their identities so the hero will be punished for the villain's crimes.

I also remember one specific scene which is probably more helpful than all of the info above:

The hero learns that a person in Chinatown may be able to help him. He tracks this person down, and the Chinatown dweller tells him an ancient Chinese fable, about a poor man who was given a beautiful vase by his rich friend. The poor man was secretly disappointed by this, as he'd hoped for something to help him feed his starving family, so he put the vase on a shelf and forgot about it. Many years later, the vase was accidentally broken - and turned out to be full of gold. The moral of the story, "Look inside the vase", later turns out to be helpful somehow.

I would guess that the movie was made some time around the early 1990s, though I could easily be WAY off...

ANY attempt to help me out, is welcome!

Big Trouble...IN LITTLE CHINAAA!

Sorry, thats not the movie you were looking for, but I totally recommend it anyway. It'll help ease the pain of never figuring out what the actual movie you're looking for is.

Uh...I've got no idea. I initially thought "Sin City" because of the "at night" bit. Sorry, I've got no idea.

I wish I could. I tried to search for key words in your post, but it always brought me back to this thread!

I've tried the keyword approach myself, but I always came up empty. YOU, at least, managed to find SOMETHING!

was it in colour or black & white?

EDIT: I just read a list of all the 1990s films and nothing there had the right plot, yes I am now obsessed with finding this damn movie

Reminds me a lot of Judge Dredd...

Is it in the future and does it have Sylvester Stallone?
It's definitely not Judge Dredd. The hero is an average person who suddenly becomes America's Most Wanted for no reason he can comprehend. And it's not set in the future. Thanks for taking the time, though!

Can you name any of the actors?
No, that's actually very much of the problem.

It's in colour. Also, it may have been made in the late 1980s, or maybe even earlier - as I was saying, I'm REALLY not sure of this. I just get that "Some time around 1990"-vibe when I think about the movie.

Good to hear I'm not the only one who's obsessed, though! If I manage to identify the movie by any means other than this thread, I'll be sure to let you all know!

Ok well the movie list turned out to be a dead end I got all the way to 1960 and nothing sounded like your film, though I doubt that list was comprehensive...

I have no idea but it reminds me of a similar situation I was in. I had seen a trailer for a horror movie and then heard nothing about it ever again ever. I searched long and hard and had given up over the course of years. Finally one day I'm flipping through the IO on demand list and I fucking found it, as I'd just given up. It was called Cry_Wolf.

I watched it.

It kinda sucked.

I think certain aspects of your description point to the movie possibly being Dick Tracy starring Warren Bea6ty, 1990.

The fedora (worn by Tracy) 50's and the twin (The Blank)
It has been a long time since Ive seen the movie, but there were some very notable names in it, and it won several awards.
Let me know if I found it :D

At first, I thought it was the fugitive. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Fugitive_%281993_film%29

Do you remember physical details? Any character traits?

Your description of the plot seems REALLY off, but I think I know the movie you're talking about. I'm completely blanking on the name of the movie right now, but here's the plot as I remember it:

There's a guy who likes the girl next door. His brother, fixes him up with her, dresses him up to look like himself, and gives him his credit card, and his car (which he had forgotten actually has a dead body inside).

It turns out that this brother is really a thief, and is using his younger brother (who now looks like him) as an alibi, so that people think they've been seeing him out on the town on a date, while he is actually burglarizing the house of a chinese mobster.

I remember that the movie is a comedy/romance, and has something to do with Dating in the title. Also, the main character's name is McQ.
OK, everybody, I did some research based on AjimboB's theory, and I am now 90% sure that the movie I'm looking for is, in fact, Mystery Date (1991), starring Ethan Hawke and Teri Polo. Three cheers for AjimboB, people!

I have now ordered one DVD copy of Mystery Date from Amazon.co.UK, and it will likely arrive in Norway within a week. I will post an update to let you all know for sure once I've watched it. For the time being, if anyone thinks the mysterious movie might NOT be Mystery Date, I'm still open for alternatives!

Yes, that IS the movie I was trying to remember! I'm pretty sure it was the movie you were talking about as well, since it has all of the scenes you mentioned (although some are slightly different than what you seem to remember). The ones that really tipped me off were the body in the trunk, and the chinese proverb, both of which are in Mystery Date.

Anyway, I'm happy that what I said was helpful (the name of that movie was really bugging me too).
Aha! So it DOES have that Chinese story! That settles it - I am now 100% positive that the mystery movie IS in fact Mystery Date!

And to everybody who took the time to reply to this thread: Thanks for the help, it is MUCH appreciated!
