I'm trying to remember the name of an anime I watched several years ago. I only have a few vague clues to work from and I don't remember any names, so I was hoping someone out there might recognize what I've got.

It was a futuristic/sci-fi series with a dark noir feel to it. The artstyle is pretty realistic - not photo-realistic, but good attention to detail and normal body proportions mostly. The main character is a cop or ex-cop/private detective. Older guy, usually wearing a trench coat, who lives by himself in an apartment and drinks too much. The other main character is a young girl who is some sort of super powerful robot with amnesia. I can't remember the exact explanation for her abilities (cyborg/robot/modified human experiment), but she is ridiculously strong yet child-like and naive, clueless about the world but able to destroy almost anything that messes with her. She has some kind of crazy anime hairstyle - I think green hair in long pigtails, but not positive, and typical anime-style cuteness with the big eyes. Her disposition is sweet and she comes across as good-natured, but her potential for destruction and general lack of knowledge about the world are a significant source of concern for the humans around her. There were a number of side characters, but I honestly don't remember them much at all. The main characters live in a large city under some sort of threat - I don't remember exactly what it was or if they even fully explain what's going on. I know the girl fights a really big (mechanical?) monster-thing at some point, but fighting isn't the main focus of the series.

The two lead characters meet by chance while the cop guy is investigating something - somewhere dark and dangerous, either under the city in the sewers or in the back alleys. He ends up adopting her like a lost puppy, basically because she has nowhere else to go and he feels protective toward her. If I'm remembering correctly, the cop guy lost his own daughter tragically. The plot of the series revolved around figuring out more about the girl's mysterious past, her intended purpose and her humanity (or lack of humanity, since she is some kind of android or modified human).

It was an interesting series and I liked it. I just wish I'd written the name down somewhere. There is a LOT of anime out there and unfortunately "cop + robot girl" doesn't narrow it down much. XD Thanks for any help you can give me!

Do you remember if it was a series or a movie?

That reminds me of a couple of the anime movies produced by Studio Ghibli, like Castle in the Sky (also called Laputa) and Howl's Moving Castle. They both have flying machines, old planes, and eccentric steam-punk technology, along with a touch of magic and a cheerful attitude.

"Steamboy" also comes to mind, but it isn't exactly bright and cheerful. It has the zepplins and planes, tho!

I'll weigh in on one I need identified. It was mentioned here a little while back and I watched the 1st episode but have forgotten the name.

The basic premise was some evil empire had invaded Japan using awesome mech robots. And the main character liked chess, that much I remember. But the rest is a blur...

Hmm...Might be interested in something all of a sudden...If it's as close to Deus Ex 3 as the second post suggested, then I'm in.

You wouldn't be referring to Big O, would you? Except for a few details, it matches up pretty well.

EDIT: Ah, did not read topic.

Dammit you beat me to it. But yes. It's great. The mechs and the plot get so much better as the series goes on :D
