Today I managed to go online in the first FPS I ever went online with, way back in 2002. The game was Shogo: Mobile Armor Division, and it was and is different from every other FPS I've ever played. It came out around the same time as the original Half Life, and was pretty much completely overshadowed by it, but man was it a cool game. It was an absolute love letter to anime, and it had both traditional on foot levels and levels in which you piloted a giant robot. The giant robot levels played like a standard FPS, but they had a different weapon set than the on foot levels, as well as a few different mechanics, like double jumps and vehicle modes.
The server that is still running can be found at 71.201.147.108:27888 if anyone has the game and is willing to give it a shot, and there are community websites at [link]http://shogo.pentacle.nl/e107/news.php[/link] and [link]http://thegravelpit.info/forums/index.php/board,6.0.html[/link].
For discussion value, does anyone have any memories of Shogo? It was a great game, and to this day the one with the single tightest community I've ever seen. Everyone knew everyone else, and playing on the server felt pretty similar to hanging out at a tabletop gameshop; it was a social experience of the sort only nerds can truly bring about.
Edit: to the mods: I am not in any way affiliated with the community sites that I listed. Before tonight, I hadn't even played the game online since 2008, when as far as I knew, the game died. I thought that there might be some old timers on this site who would be interested, and I hope that there is enough discussion value in this topic that it doesn't count as advertising. Please let me know if there isn't.
