I'm looking through the credits but I don't see M. Night Shyamalan credited as co-director for that amazing twist at the end.

I'm guessing it's because of the radiation, unless animals were bi-pedial and able to talk before the fallout hit, but that wouldn't explain how he was able to use 2x4s on Willie, unless it was a really small 2x4. (Based on the Cuddle's videos, there's no evidence that he could even talk back then. Admittedly the fact that he was either sneaking or playing a kazoo mean that he wouldn't be able to talk in them.)
