I confess to owning an iPod, and even having iTunes installed, but that last one is only because I can't get Songbird's iPod syncing feature to work right, I swear. It really would be nice if Apple had learned some valuable lessons from its near death experience, but it seems, instead of resolving to be a morally upright and consumer friendly company, it decided to copy everything I hate about Microsoft, and skip everything that makes Windows my preferred OS.
So here is some advice to both companies:
1. Don't treat people you depend upon for revenue like they are criminals. There are more of us than you, and the people you are really pissing off are the ones who will find a way to circumvent any protection you put in our way.
2. Don't treat people you depend upon for revenue like they are idiots. We're not, and when all is said and done we are smarter than you. So don't try and force us to use your software by bundling it with other programs and calling it an update (I'm looking at you Apple Update).
3. On a tangent to this is removing software. Don't make it impossible to remove a program/disable features. As to why, see parts 1 and 2.
Lastly, the end user license agreement. Get rid of it, and replace it with something written by a human mind, not a computer that spits out nonsense legal phrases.
p.s.-Apple Automatic Update is lurking somewhere on two of my installed OS's, and no, I still don't want Safari.

If modding is illegal then lock me up! I doubt that modifying your iphone will be more then a $50 ticket. If they threw people into jail for that shit then people would be executed for j-walking!

It's like with anything with a viod sticker, the sticker comes off then they company has no control over what you do and claims no responsibity. Why can't it be the same with the iPhone?

Even more reason why I love my Windows Mobile device. What a load of crap, and what a "fuck you" to developers by forcing all apps to be distributed ONLY on the Apps store. I will never understand why people keep blindly following Apple with all the shitty products they make and lack of interoperability. The "Our way or high way" mentality of Apple didn't work with their computers back in the day (I love how they buckled and went to the Intel Chipset) and it is destined to fail once these phone developers get their act together and finally make a phone with a decent web browser and touch screen abilities.
Even if its made illegal, it it actually going to stop anyone doing it? I think not, they can moan all they like about how your a bad person, but they can't really do anything past that, remember kids its only illegal if your caught.
I can see why they're doing it, and really, they have every right to. You are allowed to ban people for modding your copyrighted product. If it's in the T&C, you have to abide by it.

I'm a big fan of apple and have had an iphone 3G and 2 ipods (over 5 years) but I mostly agree with what most people here are saying. Still, they're not as bad as Sony when it comes to the PSP. They actually updated the software solely and specifically to prevent people from jail-breaking it.
Still, most of the time the big companies see what the jail-breakers are making and add it legitimately unless it'll go against profits.
