From what alot of stuff that has been going on with apple and endorsing (or whatever) into gaming for the ipod/ipad/iphone it seems they are taking a leap in the market. It almost seems like in the near future we will see a Apple Console and with a new Game Center probably something like Steam (even though its coming to Macs) on mac computers.

So how do you guys think this may effect the gaming industry? will it kill off the psp and or the ds with it raving in popularity or fail..?

I still don't buy it, I don't think Apple have it in them for a console. Maybe if they stopped developing all this stupid touchy crap, then they could make a decent console, but right now they only provide music storage and minor distractions. Oh and I am T-Pain, that's pretty awesome.

More consoles = more competition = lower prices = good

More consoles = more exclusives = FUCK.

I do suppose it's worth mentioning that Apple has already made a console in the past. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Pippin]

Honestly from my understanding of it if Apple wanted to really get into the game market they'd be more supportive of developers releasing games compatible with the Mac OS.

Case in point: Wasn't there some scuttlebutt floating about awhile back involving Valve potentially releasing titles for the Mac OS?

I think that the main reason Microsoft currently has the monopoly on the market is that they give away free DirectX implementation. Until Apple develops something at least as good, they won't be able to properly enter the market.

I agree with a poster above me; apple/mac are too pre-ocupied with mass producing random gadgets.. (I'd know- I bought most of them :s). Got a MacBook, and iPhone, iPod etc..

Mac has it in them to do anything, but they're stuck on this high-tech touch screen stuff to move off, just cus its making them a HELL of a lot of money, which sucks, because they could be making some reallllly good shit.

As for gaming, this is 1 industry that mac took a while to get into, with so few titles being released on my poor power-house of a machine. Finally since DA:O, developers might start seeing the huge potential in Macs, so soon enough Macs'll be up there with all you windows people.

As for a console.. hmm, it really doesn't seem like Apple/Mac style. Maybe in the future, but I'd say no for now. Let them get into the PC gaming first. But I do agree that if they DID make a console, it'd be fucking awesome, (And I'm sure very exclusive, knowing them!)

And also agreed on the whole competition/price : competition/exclusivity argument.. a tough one.

i think that it will take some time for apple to be accepted as a gaming developer/publisher.

Screw macs, screw ipads and screw consoles. I'm sick of being stuck with MMOS and FPS games on PC!>< Bring PC back onto your platform lists for games and THEN i might care what other platforms are doing.

All of my thoughts about Apple entering the gaming market can pretty much be summed up by this:

Somehow I don't think iphone style marketing is going to translate well into gamers. I think Gaming is far too competitive for overpriced underpowered pieces of hardware that sell purely on ignorance simply because its stylish.

Maybe I'm confused here, but it was my understanding Apple already made their "Gaming platform," the iPad.

If you google the term "Revolutionize gaming iPad" you'll get hundreds of articles discussing this topic. I don't think Apple is interested in getting into the console market. I think they are interested in bringing the casual gaming market to their iPad.

This could work for them, but I don't think gamers like those who post on the Escapist are likely to see any major implications in our gaming world. People who primarily game on their phones or on Facebook are more likely to see major changes int he way they game.

I miss the good ol' days when gaming was done on a computer CD or console. All this iPod/cell phone exclusive crap is getting to me. I guess I'm just angry at casuals taking over.

This is a strange suggestion. The event you're referring to is Valve announcing that Steam and all of their Source titles will be coming out for OS X this month (which, incidentally, I can't wait for). Apple certainly does nothing to discourage developers from releasing their games on OS X; it's not like there are licensing fees like there are with consoles. The only reason that games aren't released on OS X is that most developers don't feel that it's worth the development effort or cost to port them over to an operating system that has a smaller user base than Windows.

You seem to be implying that Apple discourages games on OS X; I don't see where that comes from, or how it even makes sense, seeing as the poor game library is widely seen as one of the very, very few disadvantages OS X has when compared to Windows.

Apple is going to release an RPG about a twenty-something living in Portland, OR who grows an ironic mustache and becomes the frontman to an extremely pretentious indie rock band. The main conflict comes from the cool post-rocker with the heroin addiction trying to steal the homely thrift store girl with the totally vintage (and ironic) Journey concert T-shirt.
