I just downloaded/installed Fallout 3 from the steam sale and was wondering if there were any

mods I should get before playing? I am new to modding games, so sources would also be nice on how

to apply these mods. Thank you.

Best source to get mods for the various Gamebryo engine games would be the Nexus Forums. In your case the Fallout 3 Nexus [http://fallout3.nexusmods.com/]. You need to make an account there and then you have access to pretty much the vastest amount of mods for that game you'll ever see. Furthermore, they got a handy tool called the Nexus Mod Manager [http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/modmanager/] which allows you to install these mods pretty easily.

While I cannot speak for F3 specifically since I haven't replayed it with mods yet, here's some additional advice from modding the other Gamebryo games: don't underestimate the time you might have to invest when making multiple mods to work. First, they all usually require a specific load order to function together, which is a pain in the ass to find out. However, there is a handy tool integrated in the Mod Manager called BOSS (or perhaps you need to download it, but let me assure you: it's worth it) which does that for you based on a database it updates from the Internet. That works reasonably well but not always, which brings me to the second point: if you download a mod, always check the readme for compatibility issues, errors or what have you. They also often feature a manual install route which you can go if they can't be installed through the manager or so. It's also all on the Nexus. Thirdly you will also need a script extender to make many mods work which will probably just be called Fallout 3 Script Extender or something like that. From what I know, it's just a modified .exe that brings with it some further scripting capabilities that some mods need. Keep an eye out for it and download it, when necessary.

As for what mods to install, I'd recommend to first take a look onto the all-time top-list on the Nexus. Those are usually the ones you want to install. As a specific recommendation I've heard a lot of good about Mothership Zeta Crew [http://fallout3.nexusmods.com/mods/8747].
