This ought to get some nostalgia flowing. I'm in the mood for a 90's RPG, and I've never played Arcanum or any of the Baldur's Gate games. I KNOW right?

I think I only have time for one game before this urge runs out and I get sidetracked by something else, so what should it be?

For what it's worth, I'll say Arcanum. I think you'll get a lot of nudging towards BG, though. And frankly, it's not baseless, I just personally love Arcanum much more but whatever floats your boat - Arcanum has the more techy stuff and it (tries to) break from the "standard fantasy" while BG...is D&D, what more can I say here.

Might as well forget about it and just move on to the next AAA new shit flavor of the month.
That's a bit uncharitable. What I mean is I've been down this road before. For example, the thought crosses my mind: "Hey, I should check out Fallout 1 and 2". I spend a month or so playing Fallout, but then when it comes time to play another one, I feel like playing another genre entirely. It's not just 90's RPGs that make me feel this way - any genre of game, if I play it for too long, gets tedious, so I have to mix it up with something else. Doesn't mean it's Gears of War or CoD that's keeping me from playing them.

Just ignore him. He's the resident god-to-mankind always reminding us that old games were better and anything that comes out nowadays is poo.

Don't forget it now, actually it doesn't matter, he will remind you probably 6 more times within the month.

OT: Do you like traditional fantasy more? If so you might enjoy BG as it's set in a more traditional fantasy setting, as opposed to Arcanum which is like...I guess fantasy steampunk.

They are both really fun, in the end it will probably come down more to your preference of aesthetic.

I'm not too interested in traditional fantasy to be honest, but as long as the writing and characters are good I'm fine with it. That's why I'm leaning toward Arcanum. I like the idea of the usual Tolkien races undergoing an industrial revolution!

What are the immediate differences between the two? IE which one has stronger characters/settings, better gameplay, etc.?

Just objectively speaking Baldur's Gate 2 is the superior game. Better gameplay, more cohesive experience, more interesting companions, better visuals and so on. The story is excellent, the tactical rpg combat is fun, and it's got a great soundtrack. Honestly as far as rpg go it's pretty much the high bar to which I hold up every other rpg experience. So far none have toppled it in my eyes, not overall anyway. Every now and then another rpg might do one or two things better but I still find BG2 the most cohesive of the genre.

That said if you're into the steampunk setting, love the Fallout style of wackiness and 'everything goes' roleplaying, and prefer your combat a bit more actiony then Arcanum is a damned solid experience as well. Terribly balanced even with the various fan mods but then I've always felt the novelty of being able to play as a hooker with a flamethrower outweighs that. Not many games allow that sort of over the top insanity when it comes to character cusomization and roleplaying options.
