No, they have nothing to do with the CNS. HOWEVER, they do change. It's common for people to have changing allergies throughout life. However, there is little rhyme or reason to the way in which they form or disappear.

Also, is English your first language? If not, then I completely forgive you.

Some of them probably are. But not for pollen and mold and that shit.

Allergies to pet dander arn't in the mind. My brother will actually swell up if he's near a longhaired cat for too long. There are other allergies that are also defiantly not in the mind. An overabundance of pollen in the air can make it hard for me to breath. My eyes will tear up and become puffy and red. There is also lactose intolerance... which, if you've ever experienced, is something I'm sure you will immediately realize is NOT mental.

No. Maybe in a few cases, but it's actually not uncommon for old allergies to disappear, or new ones to arise. They are certainly not in the mind though, there's known reasons for allergies, and known ways to combat many of them.

Allergies being in the mind would make sense if it weren't for the fact that you can observe visible welts and skin reactions of allergic substances like molds or pollens in a blind test without identifying what it is to the patient, and no reaction on things they aren't allergic to.

I didn't suffer from allergies at all when I was little, but, now that I'm older, it's a nightmare. I wake up in the middle of the night practically every night with sinus inflammation.

I'm alergic to cheap watches, fabric bandaids and spray on skin bcause of the chemical they have in common, it's a type of glue.

THe watches make my skin red and inflamed.

Banaids and Spray on skin make my skin bubble up, incredibly painful (Like it's on fire) and incredibly itchy to boot. The closest img I can find is this: http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-v_ypdUFRXSU/TcYKVH0WUFI/AAAAAAAAAYU/FAC6HNlTKnQ/s1600/hives.jpg

My reactions are FAR FAR worse than that.

It's not the sort of thing that's in your head.

But my cousin does have a few bloody stupid "Allergies" which don't even exist, he's just a (An?)hypocondriac.

Rarely. Pollen kills by suffocation.

You think I'm kidding? I have a friend... She's allergic to grass(or grass mites possibly). In Kansas. She has to stay inside all the time :(

I am allergic to boiled corn ( Yes , seriously) . If someone boils corn near me I almost suffocate....I found this out at like 7 when my grand mother was making some boiled corn and I passed out and go to the hospital immediately . Ironically , I don't have such a aggressive reaction to corn that is not prepared or grilled , but if it's boiled , it's worse than anthrax to me.

Interesting thought. Allergies can change over time, it's something a lot of people have experienced - a close friend of mine bought a cat a few year ago, having had a few in her childhood, only to find herself puffing up with allergies- but it most definitely is not all in the mind.

The fact a friend of mine will die quickly if she eats nuts is clear proof of it not being psychosomatic.

No, they're not. Psychosomatic reactions are. People can hardly die of those unless the mind is REALLY unstable, but allergies have - at their extremes - killed. Sorry, it would be nice if such things could be overcome by a strong will, but as they say..."The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.".

While your body's tolerance levels towards certain things can change throughout your life, it is not in your head. I've seen a ton of speculation about the origin of allergies but the one I like best can be found on Cracked.com.

Allergies change over time sometimes, though I suppose it could be possible for a person to suffer psychosomatic allergies.

Also, when it comes to cats and other animals, different breeds produce different levels of the hormone that cause the allergic affect in humans. While there is no such thing as a cat that produces none, maybe when you were young, a friend had a cat that produced a good deal resulting in a severe reaction from you. You assumed it to be all cats, but this person's cats don't produce enough to cause a significant reaction from you.

No. Allergies seem to be connected to an unusually high level of Immunoglobulin E [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Immunoglobulin_e]. Normally, IgE protects us from non-bacterial parasites, but in some unfortunate individuals IgE triggers inflammation in response to otherwise harmless substances like pollen, animal dander, and food proteins (peanuts).

If I were to take a (somewhat) educated guess, I'd say that these individuals have an ancestry that came into contact with waterborne and foodborne parasites very often.
