From what I can tell, Valkyria Chronicles and Disgaea 3 and 4 are the only ones I've played. And they're all very good.

Personally, I prefer 4 over 3, but that's just me.
Played Disgaea D2? It'd a direct sequel to the first. Quite a lot of changes.

Yes I have. Just neglected to mention it. Mechanically, it's probably my favorite in the series, story wise I kinda prefer 1 and 4. Not saying that this one was bad, but it could have better IMO.

The short answer is no.

Valkyria Chronicles is fine. It has huge design missteps and a lot of awkward difficulty curving. It was a great idea and it has a lot going for it, but ultimately, I don't think I would recommend it over just playing FF Tactics for the 1000th time.

Persona 3 and 4 are really the only JRPGs within the last half decade or so that I would recommend. That genre has really faltered and lost itself imo.

The Disgaea series is less pure up front JRPG and more some really superb turn based strategy RPG's. Probably the best comparison would be to Final Fantasy Tactics or Tactics Ogre. Just with some very anime'ish slapstick weirdness bolted on. The actual game mechanics are incredibly deep if a bit grindy. Just so long as you can get past the cute anime version of Hell. (wish I was joking about that one.)

Valkyria Chronicles is enjoyable. Once again another Tactics type game.

They got rid of the store-bought innocents; that was a huge weight of my shoulders.

Buying something doesn't take five minute while you try to get gear with good stats.

No. No it's not. Pretty graphics do not excuse a crap game. Yahtzee was right.

Yahtzee doesn't like JRPGs so I treat his opinion on them like I do MovieBob's on mindless action flicks.

Ni No Kuni has a fantastic OST, decent VA, great graphics, and a solid battle system.

Was it some kind of groundbreaking, FF6 type, of JRPG?
No.

But it is one hell of an enjoyable ride.

That's funny, because it seemed he liked the hell out of Dark Souls.

Maybe I watched the mirror universe Yahtzee?

I've played all but the newest (Victory) of the Hyperdimension Neptunia franchise, and well, The series has it's pro's and cons. I personally love it, it has an interesting story, the characters are fun, and the combat is passable.

I haven't played much of Agarest, I only borrowed it from a friend once, but what I remember is pretty ok. It's a strategy rpg, fire emblem style if I remember correctly? It's been on my 'to buy" list for a while now

And finally, Trinity Universe. I liked the game, but it was a loooong time since I played it, the first gsme I bought for ps3 actually. Of course, I'd recommend playing Disgaea first though, it's got a few characters from that series (not that you really need to know, unless you care about why there's a lolicon demon and her peglegged penguins)

Dark Souls isn't a JRPG anymore than Dragon's Dogma is.

By whose standards? Both games originated in Japan, and an action RPG is still an RPG, or most of what everyone suggested is moot.

By normal standards?
It's like saying CoD is a JRPG or ARPG because it has a level system.

JRPG are turn-based, and follow certain tropes.

Final Fantasy is a JRPG, Dark Souls is not.

Well, then you've just suggested that the Tales series are not RPGs. Chrono Trigger, too, now that the thought strikes.

You're not going to have many friends here.

Personally, I thought it was pretty good. Really the only real negative thing I could say about it was that I felt the last 15% of the game, which involved the White Witch herself, wasn't needed. It just felt kinda tacked on compared to the rest of the game. I guess it doesn't help that the original DS version didn't have the bits with the White Witch in it.

Other than that, I thought it was a good game. Undeniably flawed, but still, definitely a game worth trying at least.

Of the games on the list, I wholeheartedly recommend:

Tales of Graces f
Trinity: Souls of Zill O'll
White Knight Chronicles
White Knight Chronicles II

I recommend just picking up White Knight Chronicles II, though. It comes with a remastered version of the original White Knight Chronicles on the disc.

I pre-warn that I find it hard to not like JRPGs, I usually find at least 1 redeeming quality, that said:

1. Time and eternity just wasn't for me, semi-enjoyed the game play, plot and other things were just... well, bad.

2. Hyperdimension neptunia/mk2/victory - Yes to mk2 and victory, the first hyperdimension neptunia had horrific gameplay and on top of that had terrible optimization and lagged like no other game I've played.

3. I loooove the atelier series, it is a bit different but I find the stories of all the games funny at times and fairly engaging - The Ps Vita versions are the best way to play I feel, it is more of a play here and there than sit down and play for hours on end type of game.

4. Ah, Agarest... well despite owning all the collector's editions for every game in the series it fails to get me excited to play, the tactical gameplay style is quite fun and well done in the later games in the series, overall it is a decent series but not very memorable.

5. I can't comment on rune factory, they don't get released here in Australia and while I could import them, from what I am to believe, they are basically harvest moon games.

6. Tales of Graces F - YES, play it! While not my favourite in the series, it is very good. I cannot recommend the Tales series highly enough. Xillia is my recent favourite (after symphonia was for all of time), Vesperia probably has the least engaging story and the gameplay (specifically battles) isn't as good as the rest of the series but Graces f, Symphonia (the HD remake comes out soon) and Xillia are highly recommended. A+

7. Disgaea - Great series, gameplay isn't for everyone, but fairly humorous at times and fun.

8. Trinity souls of zill oil - Couldn't get into it myself.

9. Trinity Universe was decently fun but is overall not very memorable

10. Last rebellion - Poor, poor execution. Battle system is different but it just isn't a well made game.

11. Valkyria Chronicles is a game that I personally didn't quite get into but I can see why others would and I still recommend people give it a go.

12. Lair is the only other game on this list that I haven't played so I cannot comment.

13. White Knight Chronicles is.. different. It was fun while it lasted but the story is near non-existent and it's all very samey after a few hours.

Another game you might want to look at is 'Resonance of Fate' which had a unique battle system, good setting and was pretty fun.

White knight chronicles to me was a poor man's Final Fantasy 12. I loved FF12 I put in 120 hours or so, but got bored of white knight chronicles about 4 hours in thinking it could be so much more.

On that list only Disgaea games and Graces F worth your time. The Atelier series is the dumbest JRPG, that I played. Yeah, I get it, that it's target demographic is girls, but the story is painful, battle is dull and the presentation leaves a lot to be desired. If you want great JRPGs just get a Wii with Xenoblade and The Last Story. Xenoblade is the best thing that happened to the JRPG genre in a decade. The Last Story is a bit weaker, but it's still one of the best JRPG I played last gen.

Dark Souls is not your typical JRPG. As far as i'm concerned if its made in Japan and its an RPG then its a JRPG.
