There's always going to be a certain genre or style of game that is going to be so popular it produces drones and drones of clones attempting to cash in on said genre's/style's success. Right now it happens to be Call of Duty-style First Person Shooters, but before that it was Guitar Hero-style rhythm games, before that it was Halo-style First Person Shooters, before that it was JRPGs and 3D Platformers, before that it was 2D Side-Scrolling Platformers, and before that it was 2D Space Shooters.
You could literally go back in time to almost any period of video game history and bring up the same exact argument, despite what many may think.
