Are low prices the only reason you use Steam?

The games on steam are not cheap when you look at new titles ..for me they are very pricey given my options of other stores online or IRL , That said i buy games that are on sale , and i have bought a lot over a few years , thats why i use steam, and the brilliant small indie games you can find.But bying a new game for say 50 or over ... not happening ....ever

I got Steam a couple of months ago. I've been mainly happy with it, but the downloads are sooooo slow. I love how all your games are in one place. Oh, and the deals are great!

Except for Monkey Island. Bought that full price. Worth every penny.

If I could buy new games at my local retailer for the prices I do at Steam I would do so. I'd rather support my local businesses given the option, and I prefer to own a physical copy of a game when possible.

I use steam every single day. The store is awesome, with a HUGE amount of games, sales left and right, and no physical copies needed. That last part is the most important one for me. I don't want physical copies at all. I have enough of them for my consoles.
Steam is one of the best things to happen to the video game industry ever, and a lot of developers, like Team Meat (Super Meat Boy, duh), will agree with me here.

Being able to download my games on any computer without the disc is great. Frankly, the problems I've had with steam mostly arose from publishers using another DRM software, like LIVE, in conjunction with steam. Especially GTAIV is guilty of this (Steam, Rockstar Social Club and LIVE at once). But, I own about 160 games on Steam, and yes, most were bought at sale. But I don't dislike Steam. It helps me keep in touch with friends, set up quick and easy matches with people, organizes my games and offers me great deals on new ones.

I would not use steam if I could get it cheaper else where. I wanted to keep hold of as much of my money as possible and with no bonus coming from buying it on steam, that I see worthwhile compared to saving money.

I don't have much room to store actual copes of games so downloading is useful to me, however if it's cheaper to buy the hard copy then I will.

Saving money comes first.

You don't need an internet connection to play games on Steam.

Only if you switch into offline mode beforehand. If you start up the computer one day and your connection has kicked the bucket, Steam won't even start. However, there could be a roundabout solution to this that I've forgotten, and I am open to the chance of me being wrong.

Actually that's not true. If you haven't booted it in offline mode before then it will tell you that you can't connect to the servers due to lack of connection. Then close it and boot it again and it will tell you that it's connected in offline mode. At least that has worked for me in the past, but it might not work for everyone.

I use Steam because it's the easiest way to keep track of my games. They update without me knowing it until I see that a download is complete. I use it as my main source of communication with my friends. I can easily invite friends to play a game with me and set up servers. Many of the games come with SDK kits. I can download games whenever I want at a high speed, it's even better than using a torrent because of the stability and quick start. You don't need a disc to play (yes I know this is true for several new games). I can preload games that I have pre-ordered so I will for one, not have to download it and wait a few hours to play it after release and two not have to go to a store on release date I (and possibly find out it's sold out if I haven't pre-ordered it). It offers a community to ask for trouble shooting questions or just have a good time with. You get some news and trailers for upcoming games.

I will admit that the price is part of the reason I use Steam, but even after they converted to 1 dollar = 1 euro I still use it and I will continue when our government will start adding 25% to the price so they wont lose money on digital purchases.

if steam was more expensive, i would probably use my ps3 a lot more, and have a lot less games. but being an online distribution service means that you get tohave them cheaper. plus its pretty useful for mobile gaming (taking a laptop with you etc) as i dont need all my bloody discs too. so yes i would still use it, and use it in preference to disc pc games.

No, you can get a game when ever you want, without having to trawl through stores, greatly prefer it to hard copy.

I love steam, the deals are just the icing on the cake though.

The real reason? I like to have all my games there o a list, a double click or a rigt click install away from play. I hate trawling through my shelves for dusty discs that I may or may not find quickly.

That and the friends list with all my friends I may want to play with a click away form an invite or chat? cream on that cake too.

The best thing I like about Steam updating is unlike on consoles it updates as soon as the file is available.

On console it only updates when you launch the game, so precisely at the moment you want to play it, it grinds to a halt updating.

the likes of XBox Live and PSN have so much to learn from Steam, it is such an amazing service. The only thing that possibly holds it back is prejudice against the PC platform.

It is a great way to keep all your games in a nicve tight spot. Keeps track of your gametimes. And because of it i dont afk in Steam games so i have a pretty accurate hour count on my gaming sessions. Its just an amazing tool.

But yes the low prices are the brutal trap that gets us all in the end. I have a bunch of games i am yet to instal and play. But i got them beause of amazing deals and i didnt want to miss out. Its honestly like a casino....well sort of...but no matter what we do and what deals we get Steam wins all our money. So yeah kind of liek a casino

And it gets constantly improved and tweaked so i think the future of steam and gaming is bright. I hate that Origin is being deployed X_X its a silly way to split the market.

I use Steam for the sales, and it's friend system. Normally I'll just find the cheapest place to buy games like ebay or amazon.
