I don't mind online multiplayer (tho I don't do it often) but I thought I was the only gamer that was baffled by forced online only multiplayer. Glad to know I'm not alone on this.
If you don't mind me asking, how did someone steal ₤150 from you on XB live?
It was a couple of years ago now, but I had a credit card associated with my account so that I could buy things on XBL. I very rarely used the 360 however, one game every few months perhaps and it was during a lull I suppose that my account was hacked. I don't know how but a hacker, somewhere, got access to my account and since I had my CC details stored, they were able to buy stuff with my card, to the value of £150, which then got gifted around the place.
So I had this charge on my card statement, checked my XBL to find these purchases made in my history but which I didn't make and immediately called MS customer services. They said they would investigate which took some time (maybe a week, two, something like that) and at the end of the investigation said they had found "no wrongdoing" and wouldn't refund me. My credit card protection too wouldn't help, saying that MS's conclusion in this instance said there was no basis for a claim. So I was left to pay off a substantial bill for purchases I never made. I cannot describe how much resentment I felt at that; I had to consciously, willingly, pay £150 to a thief, for nothing, into thin air.
In my mind, MS defended the hackers that stole my money over a customer of several years. They chose to keep the £150 they got from me by theft rather than refund it, keep a customer and who would in all likelihood have spent much more than that since. I will never use their subscription service again.
I can hope others might learn from my experience and stop using a service that allows this to happen, but without a soapbox like Jim Stirling's, I realise that's foolish. But if I can give any advice to someone who must use it, don't store any credit/debit cards on there, don't use cards on it under any circumstances. Buy points cards from other retailers/e-tailers, and load up the account with codes. That way the most that can be stolen should your account be compromised is whatever balance is left on it. Two factor authentication, if possible, is also recommended to help keep undesirables out.
