Every time I think are people really this stupid, i think back to all the stupid things i've done and realise that i'm probably just as stupid to some people.

Not turning off a stolen phone is quite silly however. Moreso than usual.

Unfortunately & despite being a strong advocate of that there is no limit to human stupidity... it still manages to surprise me from time to time. Generalized stupidity is one thing, but sometimes people can be so creatively stupid that you have to wonder if the story is true or not. It's almost it went to far into stupidity that it's taking on aspects of the other side end of the spectrum -- it'd be ingenious if it weren't so horrifically stupid to begin with.

And this is why the Darwin Awards exist.

However, you ignore the flip side of this: people are surprisingly stupid about securing their property. Here's an experiment--go to a large, full parking lot and try to open some car doors. A surprising amount of them will be unlocked. That number increases dramatically if you do this in a neighborhood.

People leave their valuables out in the open all the time, which is probably what your sister did. It's incredibly easy to steal stuff, you just have to think about it.

You're right there was one point is my life where I was into petty thief. It was crazy easy, it's almost sad that in middle school I nabbed over $200 from backpacks one day while they owners where waiting for their buses to come.

Yes, humanity CAN be impossibly stupid. We hear stories and see examples of this daily. However, I'd like to believe that these people are in the minority and that most people are sensible and logical human beings. The dumb ones just stand out more.

Eh...if the idea was to steal the thing as theft, than yes.

If it was to steal the thing and post FB comments and then throw it away (or, better yet, plant it in some random's car and give people a merry chase)...well, it's a stupid thing to do, but they've gone about it in a reasonable well.
