Are sexualised women in games insulting to male audiences too?

Well the moment you say X-Blades I kind of have to say Yes. My boyfriend literally could not play that game. The woman was a treasure hunter and she was a snobby little ***** wearing a thong and a bra.

Oh sorry, her panties were holsters...

He was literally insulted with how every time the woman took a step, her ass was bouncing like it was being dribbled. There was bouncing flesh everywhere.

We can normally take it quite well, but X-Blades is just too far
I'm hoping the main reason your boyfriend couldn't play that game was it was complete crap. Lord, what a stupid game...

He simply couldn't respect a game or give it any attention. Any game that thrown ass and boobs in your face like that is obviously trying to distract you from SOMETHING when it claims to be an action game. He had no respect for it.

That being said, he did TRY to play it, and after the first "Boss" Said screw it. the controls, the movements. Complete shit

X-Blades was ridiculous. Wet was just hilarious. And honestly, fuck Lara Croft at this point (literally---ha ha! but seriously, no).

I wouldn't say it offends me so much as just bores me now. Over-sexualized female characters in games (especially lead characters) often have no depth, and really that's the way they ought to be. Trying to give a female lead with tits big enough to warrant having their own zipcodes emotional depth is like trying to give a retard (sorry, mentally disabled person) the role of Hamlet. It just doesn't fucking work, and it's hilarious to watch them pull it off. I just can't take a too-beautiful woman seriously.

I would say that over-sexualized characters, regardless of gender are usually gratuitous. The only time they get insulting is when the advertising for it is something that's shoved in my face, as in I'm expected to like this just cos it's got some ridiculously proportioned digital girl in it or on the box. Reason why I just can't stand Bayonetta, Devil May Cry and most fighting games.

That upcoming game "Catherine" or something really takes it to a new level of obnoxious advertising.

You answered your own question.

And my answer is: Yes, It sure do.

I just hope that the game developers themselves will mature sometime in the future.

I wonder if the designers were like "Well...our game kinda sucks...maybe we should throw some boobies in there as distraction and hope folks won't notice." :p

Sex sells, it is that simple. But simple is often condescending, and its too often that a shitty game is released with a big titted girl on the front. More specifically the bit titted girl on the front is meant to offset the crap quality of a game. And even if theyre not the main protagonist theyre rediculously top heavy and a over the top image of a woman.

BMX XXX
X-Blades
DoA Bikini-ness-ness
Ninja Gaiden - Six axis jiggle.

I imagine the marketing guy standing behind me saying,
"Phrrrrrrroaaarrrrr!! Look at them titties!! You like those, phrrrroaaarrrrr, buy those titties, phrrrrroooaaarrr,"

"- but the game's been getting terrible reviews"

"phrrrroaaaarrrrrrr sir! phrroooooaaaarrrrr!"

I struggle to think of a "normal girl" in a game, I think Red Dead is the closest. Life is normal and a normal girl is best because its relatable - or at least plausable.

I feel that many game makers use titties sell games cos they think were drooling idiots - as an easy bandage for the lack of gameplay. Does anyone feel the same?
Lack of gameplay? try lack of thought.

Consider some of the games you're talking about, DOA is a half baked fighter, BMX can't sell for shit because frankly no one actually cares about BMX anymore only skateboarding, Xblades was a COMPLETE shit version of Heavenly Sword which was more or less a female replacement HD version of God of War . . . and Ninja Gaiden . . . well that's because in honesty no one that doesn't drive themselves into near a catatonic state memorizing EVERY LAST POSSIBLE OUTCOME will ever get anywhere so they fill it with copious tits to try and make us feel better about the nigh on impossible difficulty. Also so they can say "it's not shit! it's CHALLENGING!" bullshit.

And Red Dead was almost the closest I think. Personally my pick for the nearest to real is the female lead in Star Ocean the Second Story (Second Evolution to you children born after the 80s . . .) but the two female leads in Red Dead were pretty damned close too. Also of note: The three women (the two from Red and the one from Star Ocean) are all noteably SMALL BREASTED.

Has anyone else ever noticed that? as breast size increases relative IQ drains for the female chars in videogames. It seems almost wrong . . . I've known at least a few women who's breasts were naturally large who were intelligent. Yet according to games you'd think any woman with more than a B cup has less in her head than she does in her hand . . .

The less clothes the girls on the box wears, the less likely I am to buy the game.

I did have a rant here about how soul blade had a great base of characters with, mostly sad, stories (excusing Sopheftia) but Soul Caliber(s) went for skimpy outfits but I got distracted when I just saw what Ubisoft have done to my favourite tenchu character Ayame

Have you seen her lately? From Ninja outfit with double short blades and brutal fatalities to purple stripper outfit and kicking people in the balls.
Compare:

-Tenchu Wrath of heaven opening: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ELoH5p6VYvY (shes a fair way in but its a good vid)

-Ubisofts trailer of Tenchu shadow assasins entitled "Ayame is a bad girl":http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Gg7MzP0Q18

I think this is what I was going for.

But her ass bounced more than her breasts! Forget lower back problems, her legs are NOT feeling the love!

I wouldn't doubt that's what they did. Or they went "Hmm Lara croft is a sex symbol... Lets see if we can make a girl based on her, but make her a COMPLETE whore instead of just an insinuated promiscuous woman"

Yes, because it implies that men need over-sexualised women before they'll consider buying the game.

The problem is that I reckon it's true, at least for the majority of the consumer base. I would be prepared to lay a hefty bet that the majority of people who buy and play Tomb Raider don't buy it for the puzzles and the combat, and that's one of the harder titles to feature a woman in the central role. For games where the gender is purely aesthetic (fighting games), the only thing I believe that would sell is sex.

It may be insulting, but even things which are insulting can be correct. Sometimes people don't realise they're being insulted.

I think it sort of alienates people who think different types of women are attractive too. Almost like, if you don't want this oversexualized beast, you're not normal.

Insulting? No. I don't mind looking at buxom babes, virtual or otherwise. However I do find it tiresome.

I never buy games with half naked, "sexy" women in them because those games usually look terrible to me. Not to mention I don't find cartoons sexy... Except Jessica Rabbit.

I get ridculously frusrated when I see women with skimpy clothes and huge tits in video games.

Because then I know the developer really thinks men just love tits in any way shape or form.
Maybe it has something to do with my real life tendancy to not care about breasts, I don't know. Either way, I hate over sexulaized women AAAAAND men in video games.

Yes feminists, men can be sexualized as well.

Bwahahahahahahaha!

I'm sorry, thats the only response I have to this ridiculous culture of taking offence at anything and everything. Bad marketing is bad, not insulting.

I wholeheartedly agree.. The Witcher? It had a single girl with less than double D breasts in it...

Some games represent them normally though, Farcry 2, whilst not the first thing you'd think of, had pretty respectable women (as far as they were characterised :p)

No, it is not by any means insulting to anyone, regardless of gender. Why should you be insulted by what is essentially rational marketing, and which is implemented for that very reason?

Sex sells. If you don't like it, don't buy it, but don't claim to "take offense." Leave that to the small of mind and the weak of heart.

Every time I see a product that is being sold with the use of female figure to draw attention of male audience, I get insulted. The marketers think I am some primitive monkey that lives for sex.
