The people who say 1-7 are great and 10-13 are crap clearly have some bizarre standards for coming to that conclusion (or they're just trolling).
Or they just have a different taste in games than you.

FFX: Hated the main character. I liked the ability to switch party members, but hated that you had to switch them constantly if you wanted them to level evenly. Voice acting was painfully bad. I finally finished it right around when FFXII came out.

FFXII: Dislike the FFXI influence on the battle system. Vast improvement to the voice acting, and the characters don't draw my hate like Tidus does, even if Vaan is forgettable. Haven't finished it yet. Maybe I'll get around to it one of these days.

FFXIII: If a Japanese guy could constrain vomit into disc form, it might look something like this game. I've only played a few hours, but I hate every character. I hate the battle system. I hate the (lack of) level design. I don't care if the story is supposed to be good. I really don't care if the game magically gets better 10-20 hours down the road. I wouldn't read a horribly written book because it had a good ending. Why should I force myself through hours of awful gameplay and shitty characters because it might get better later on.

As for the ones that I do like... Well I started with FFVI, so I have an undeniable bias toward that one. FFIV is fun every now and then. FFVII may be overrated, but that doesn't mean it's not good. I genuinely liked FFVIII, though I admit that the Guardian Force system was annoying (too much micromanagement) and the fact that the game punishes you for leveling is stupid. FFIX was outstanding, and I still put that one in every now and then.

I mostly indifferent to the rest I'm also not including the offshoots like Tactics and Mystic Quest(which had a pretty awesome final boss theme).

speaking in matter opinion, i agree that 10 onwards is crap but 10-2 isn't all that bad they give you abilities to learn and a LEVELING system which 10 doesn't!

but on 8 and 9 they're ok, rather they're very story based! i mean the story hits you like a ton of bricks, but they also give you the element of exploration.

Could never get into 8. Too complicated and difficult and I never really engaged with the characters. 9 however is one of my favourites, just a purely awesome, old school JRPG that simple to play but difficult to master. Great plot and characters too.

I don't think it's fair to say 10 and 13 are utter crap, 12 can burn in hell though.

With the release of a gameplay video for ff vs13 of the ps3 i think square-enix are getting back to greatness the battle system is like kingdom hearts best way i can explain It. The only reason ff13 was so bad was cos it was a linear exp till u got to disk 3 then your in pulse but its not a big area and the combat system wasnt that good really if they use the same 1 that is being used for vs13 in 13-2 and make it more open world like every final fantasy before it i think it will be a great game.

But get rid of Hope i hate that kid so much

as for the final fantasy vs13 gameplay video check the link:

let me know what u think????

I think it was FFX-2 that it started to go down hill. I like all the FF games up until then, FFXII being my favourite! I cried at FFXII and then nearly killed myself after 1 fucking hour of FFXIII.

Unless they make a seriously big back step or amazing re-vamp, it's not worth the dissapointment.

Final Fantasy X is amazing. By far my favourite in the series but X-2 is an abomination. Also I liked Final Fantasy XII and XIII but I know a lot of others don't it's down to personal taste really. Although Final Fantasy XIII has been the first one out of the ones I have played that I haven't really had the enthusiasm to complete.

Final Fantasy VII, VIII and IX are also great games but I disagree with.. Well pretty much Final Fantasy fan that Final Fantasy VII was the best I think it's far from it in fact. I think that a lot of people say Final Fantasy VII is the best because it was many peoples first Final Fantasy/RPG.

I haven't played any of the games before VII but I would like to.

Final Fantasy XII is realms above X. For starters it's a hell of a lot more open world, and your gear/equipment actually matter.

Everybody is so split on which games are goo and which are bad

I'm not a fan of III, IV (but only because the amount of character deaths get to the point that it's silly) and VII (because I just find that most of the characters should not exist or at least not be in the story and some of the ones that are have no character development at all, the worst for character development)

Yet my favourites are 6, 10 and 13 with 2, 5 and 12 hanging around somewhere close.

You see, I prefer character development and emotional stories with my Final Fantasy so these (except 2 and 12 which are wildly political stories with very different and terribly advanced for their time gameplay)are in my mind the best, a lot of the ones I like the least just tend to go nowhere with their characters or story or have a big group of characters with no story or reason to be around.

Depends what you like in your game stories and don't say good. If you know what sorta stuff you want in stories or if you prefer gameplay, or even graphics or music or whatever, there's probably at least 1 FF game that you'd enjoy

You could make that argument, but it's rather weak.

FFX: Hated the main character. I liked the ability to switch party members, but hated that you had to switch them constantly if you wanted them to level evenly. Voice acting was painfully bad. I finally finished it right around when FFXII came out.
FFX is consistently rated as one of the best games of all time. You're evidently the one with the different taste. Last time I ran a final fantasy themed tabletop RPG, drawing on character types from all of the series, 2 characters were based on FFX.

FFXII: Dislike the FFXI influence on the battle system. Vast improvement to the voice acting, and the characters don't draw my hate like Tidus does, even if Vaan is forgettable. Haven't finished it yet. Maybe I'll get around to it one of these days.
It didn't draw me in like FFX did, but it certainly left an impression on others, 1 character based on FFXII.

While those are fair arguments, you're still going over the top with saying it's vomit on disc form.

FFVIII didn't punish you for leveling, you got access to more powerful spells to draw if you leveled up.

The only one out of the original ten that is considered terrible is the second one, the eighth one is a love it or hate affair, and so is fifth (I personally love them both and they are both my favourite ones).

Over the years I've noticed a distinct trend that most people agree main Final Fantasy games, 1 through 7 are fantastic. while the 10th through 13 are utter bullsh*t. what I've been determining all this while is whether or not games 8 and 9 are bad.

so I ask you wise men (and pubescents) of The Escapist: while Final Fantasy 1-7 are great, and 10-13 are fucktarded, but is 8 and 9 bad?
8 and 10 are the best games. 7 is nostalgic if you've played it before. (Actually, the same may apply to 8. Pretty sure it's not though)

This all only applies if you like those kind of games though.

Oh and tactics is cool if you ignore the story.
