in a way, yes. 90% of the games out there are FPS's which the dumbest morons on the planet can play. so techically they are getting easier, and its probably because the world is getting dumber by the second. so they figure they should make games that appeal to the masses.

Yes, and I respect it because gaming today is focusing more on Multiplayer and the more artistic side.

Yes, I would speculate for two reasons.

1. We've gotten better at games.

2. Games these days tend to try to use genuine difficulty instead of bullshit difficulty. Genuine difficulty is easier to get around.

For simple question gets a semi-simple answer.
Good games are now easy, bad games are now hard.

its all about the one hit deaths and lives system being replaced by regenerative health, checkpoints, and game saves.

Yes...yes they are...

I mean, just look at the difficulty curve comparing a game from the NES and a game on the PS3. Let's take "Little Nemo" from the NES and "Ratchet and Clank" on the PS3. Both games can qualify as action/platformers and yet Nemo is WAAAAAY tougher than Ratchet ever dreamed it could be.

If you don't believe me, just ask anyone who has played Little Nemo...

Now that games are becoming more marketed at the casual and family audiences, rather than just the straight out gamers, they have to compensate for the fact not everyone is going to be able to play at that level, so they have to make them easier.

Yes they're getting shorter, which makes them easier. I've thought about it alot and I have an explanation (one of many).

I think it's because of the graphics technology they can use (and are expected to use). Back in the glory days of Mario the games would have dozens of levels and it would say months to finish some games fully. Back then though graphic technology was simple and therefore didn't demand much ( relatively) time nor offer much complexity in design choice. Nowadays though.. the sky's almost the limit.

Developer's have engines and programs that can make things look prettier, make characters act like humans, make objects fall and shatter and roll like they should. The complexity factor has increased by an order of magnitude. There's also the issue of how technology fits in with the classic genres. The good old side-scrolling adventures would never survive in a modern market... why design a 2D- adventure game when you can make a more polished and dynamic shooter in 3D?

Consider this along with roughly the same deadlines as the past and limited storage space on consoles and computers... and it's almost no wonder to me that Halo and Call of Duty 4 weren't 30 levels long.

Well, that depends what difficulty you set it...Although Survival mode on L4D, Your basically AssRaped by Twenty tanks before you've even Loaded your gun. And I'm ALWAYS paired up with a fuckwit who activates the hordes When the game starts, not allowing anyone to get ready  And Ninja Gaiden 2 is pretty hard...Versus mode on L4D can be frustrating as a zombie when your team dont have mics so you cant use tactics, and everyone just does their own thing. To win Versus you need to use teamwork, So you can eat moar Branez!

most games have an option to change the difficulty level. if it's too easy, put it on hard... some games are still hard to start off with i'm sure, but for the rest it is usually possible to make it harder. if not and it's too easy... play something else?

I have put a lot of thought into this. I have several admittedly wierd ideas:

1. Controls now are a lot more precise. Your mouse or controller for your preferred console can sense any direction on a 2d plane, plus how far you push it to indicate speed or something. By comparison, a D-pad has eight directions and no pressure sensitivity, its just go or stop.

2. Marketing games that are really hard is incredibly difficult these days, what with casual gamers all over the place. This is why there are difficulty settings.

3. Since there is the possibility for more gameplay mechanics, the challenge comes from using a bunch in tandem rather than having super good timing or reflexes. This is apparently a lot easier.

4. HUD and better graphics make it easier to tell whats going on.

Thats all I can think of really. I may have more eventually but I dont feel like typing anymore.

im not sure, theyr definately shorter than they used to be. maybe its just all the practise finally paying off. you can always set a game on hard afterall
but i do think alot of developers are half-assing the campaign modes and concentrating too much on multiplayer
