Im currently trying MS Securty Essentials

none has actually satisfied me, ive seen them work worse or better from computer to computer so i dont have a definitive choice.

In all of the tests I've seen Trend Micro has done badly. I'm gonna go read a review :p
I never go by the reviews. I go by my real world experience. I did support for a number of years. When I scanned a customers system with Malwarebytes(removed after use) as a courtesy and they had Trend Micro the systems never really had any infections. But that is just my anecdotal 2 cents adjusted for inflation.

For everyone who has any free program I would suggest backing it up with this program. It too is also free and is really good at getting infections off of your system.

Malwarebytes: http://www.malwarebytes.org/

No I am not a shill for the program. I just think it is really great.

I use norton, only because it came free with my computer =P
Yeah, me too.
Though my subscription runs out in a little over a month, so I think I'll look into this AVG thing, since everyone's saying it's so good.

It isn't whatever OS you use or anti-virus program, it is your competence on the internet.
Urm, no.
I've worked part time at a tech support company, and all the time we'd get PCs which had been crippled by viruses hidden in innocent attachments sent by the users friends.

Viruses can be hidden in nearly anything now, and they can add a single line of code to a file, which you send as an attachment, and when the attachment is opened, it will download the full virus in the backround.
So it's not your competence on the internet, it's also your friends, and their friends, and their friends.
All it takes is ONE of these people to go watch some dodgy porn, and WUH-BAM the virus spreads like wildfire. Trust me, I've seen it.

Get some proper protection, dude.

I don't use any anti-virus protection, I don;t get any viruses because I am not an idiot. My brother has a Mac, he uses anti-virus programs for it because he got Mac viruses, he is an idiot. It isn't whatever OS you use or anti-virus program, it is your competence on the internet.
Your brother must look up a lot of p0rn... and it is a mac soo... gay porn?

...

disregard that last bit

so MACs DO get viruses? false advertising...
Any computerised thing ever can get a virus. Hell, iPods can get a virus when they connect to your computer if your computer has a virus compatible with the iPod.

There are never any virus-free computer systems for long. SOMEONE will make a virus for it, for whatever reason.

I believe there was even a case where viruses got into MP3 players on the manufacturing line; I believe McDonalds was doing some MP3 player promotion where you could win a free MP3 player, and they came with a worm virus on them.

Let's see now...I have F-secure Internet Security 2010, Spybot S&D and I use Noscript and Adblock plus in Mozilla Firefox, which is my main internet browser.

The only trouble I have with this version of F-secure is that as it monitors internet acitivity, it also checks videos. So it takes sometimes 30 seconds for a youtube video to start loading, because it is being checked...A bit annoying, but I can take it.

Also, F-secure has its own firewall, which is a good thing, I guess. Though it did startle me at first, when I noticed my Windows Firewall was turned off, and it did so every time I rebooted. After panicking for a while, I deducted that because F-secure has a firewall, my computer decided to turn Windows firewall off, as it was unnecessary. Other than that, this antivirus program is quite efficient in my opinion.

I simply used the one my internet provider supplied me with. It is cheap and it updates often. So far i havent got any troubles with it.

I think it was more to make sure your Internet still worked. I mentioned before that I ran two firewalls at once at one point (AVG and Avast), and the result was that ALL Internet traffic was totally blocked.

I used to use McAffee, but my subscription ran out and so I switched to Avira and Spybot S&D. Never had a problem, although when Avira scans it hogs lots of resources.
