Are you actually good at gaming?

I used to be good at WipEout. I could get gold every time with any ship on any track in the original and 2097. Wip3out was a little more annoying because the air brakes were useless and to actually get a decent speed you had to sacrifice your shield, I was okay at it, but the change in mechanics made it harder since I wasn't used to the layout. WipEout Fusion was the last one I played before moving onto the Xbox 360 and letting my brother have the PS2 when he moved away to Germany, so I'm not familiar with how things are in the latest versions.

I'm also one of those dickheads who can pull off all the tricks in Devil May Cry (all of them) like JC and SC along with being able to do all the style switch combos and the air-hop combos which allow you to stay in the air for however long you want. Also the related combo styles in Bayonetta, which aren't really much different other than the jump cancel is replaced by the twirl cancel and the dodge cancel and it's a little trickier to utilize the hand/feet combo setup effectively, but it's okay when you get used to it.

I'm also pretty good at Bust-A-Move-2 Arcade Edition and could speed run through the "story mode" without much difficulty.

Everything else, though? I suck harder than a black hole blow job. I like FPSs but I'm a terrible shot, I can get a headshot if I took some time to aim, but most of the time I'm a spray and pray kind of guy.

Also, I'm aware that black holes don't really suck, they just have a very strong gravitational pull, I was trying to be clever.[/sub]

Not all games surely- im not too big on sports games, and not all racing games i can play- but FPS, RTS, and RPG games. or any mix of them, i'd say once i play enough of a new one im really good. I'm good at certain game I play a lot, like Half Life 1, Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Quake 3, but that's only because I play them a lot. I'm fairly decent at anything else, and I'll play on normal difficulty for something I have never played before.

I do like a challenge, I don't like fake difficulty.

I'd like to think I'm good at games, but I know that there's a huge difference between different types of games and I won't even pretend to delude myself with the thought that I may be one of the best. Some people out there are insane...TOO good at games even.

I can do most games fairly alright, but for example, can't do Insanity on ME2 (but did it in ME1), suck at Halo, CoD, etc. mostly because I never play them. But like, RB/GH? Hell, in Rock Band 3 I have several number 1 scores on the leaderboard. My strength seems to be in rhythm and puzzle games but I can hold my own in most others. Really it all comes down to practice. You're going to be good at the ga,es you play the most.

And even then, sometimes you won't feel like you're good if you're playing competitively online...but like I said; there are a lot of people out there who are just INSANE. I can beat anybody I know at Risk: Factions, but it took me months to beat 10 people online for the Achievement.

Im 29, been gaming since I was 3, games today dont challenge us unless we set a difficulty for ourselves in which to do so, so most gamers have become too lax. Theres competitive games that force us to be better of course, but only by playing with the best, do we become the best. Ive been in a number of tournaments for certain games, and have always come out in the top bracket and have even won some (some of which would be compilation of 10 random games of different genres). FPS Ive never excelled at aside from golden eye which I won 3 tournaments for. I've never been outmatched in pve in WoW, no matter the class/role I play, and I've been in some top rated guilds as their top dps.

The reason I mention those things is because I have them to confirm that I am good at gaming. I encounter a lot of people online, especially in mmos, that believe themselves to be good, despite all evidence to the contrary. /end ramble

Summary: Im great in games that can be learned and then played following the rules the mechanics dictate. Im not so good in games that require a lot of multitasking and quick (but deep) decision making.

Long Version:
I am absolutely perfect in every game that is simple enough to just learn the mechanics and then press the right buttons (World of Warcraft, Darkspore, Diablo, Sims,..) Being a gamedesigner i find those games too easy as soon as i understand the mechanics.

When it comes to reaction based games like FPS i do kinda well as i have a natural advantage by having an ADD. I also loved playing them since Castle Wolfenstein cause they are easy and fun to play.

I struggle with Games that require a lot of focus and strategy. I never managed to reach Diamond-League in Starcraft2 1v1 for example. After a whole year of playing im still stuck in platinum league. And Starcraft2 is the one game to measure yourself against. Everything else falls flat in comparison (VERY flat that is).

Generally, I'm not very good at shooters, but then again I don't really play them much so that works. However, I do think I'm pretty good at (or at least I was in my prime) games such as Guitar Hero, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater (any of them), several of the Legend of Zelda and Mario games, and Portal.

I am about decent to pretty good on most games I play, but I cannot for the life of me competently command an RTS unit. RPG's I am fine with, but RTS's, no can do.

I think I only play games to pass the time and for something to "do".

I'd say I'm extremely good at games that I try at, and definitely when I learn their routine.

I used to suck at splinter cell until I looked at a walkthrough and started understanding what the flow was, then I did it on my own and that was for all of them, unless of course I literally had no idea what to do.

I sucked at reach because the AI was harder at the start, but I adapted... and while I hate multiplayer it's not because I'm not good at it.

I did legendary and it took days to get past one level, but eventually I started doing legendary all the time as a norm.

I always do hardest difficulties after a normal or hard playthrough.

These days, I rarely need help.

It really depends on the game. I'm excellent at Tetris and Lumines. I was fairly good at Mario Kart 64. I can handle Mass Effect 1 and 2 just fine (except perhaps on Insanity). I'm also fairly good at straight FPS/TPS games like Battlefield Bad Company or Call of Duty or Uncharted or Killzone or Gears of War.

However, as Deus Ex Human Revolution showed me, I am very bad at stealth games. I've had to bust the difficulty of DE:HR down to "Tell me a story" quite a few times (especially during the Boss fights). I am awful at Metal Gear Solid games, despite really enjoying them. I am also awful, absolutely AWFUL at any RTS game - starcraft is beyond me. I'm also pretty bad at platformers. To this day I have not finished a Mario game. I just.... I just can't do it. I can finish Uncharted 2 on Hard with no difficulty. I've done Mass Effect 2 on Hardcore (although not insanity). But Super Mario Brothers (the original) flummoxes me. I have immense difficulty with even games like Super Mario Galaxy. Something about how Mario controls permanently frustrates me to no end. I just can't handle those games, no matter how hard I try.

Also, I'm terrible at racing games. Except for Mario Kart, which isn't a serious racing game (you can pretend all you want, but you know it's not). I love wipeout, but I'm terrible at it. As for fighting games, I am also quite bad. I can usually finish the single player portions/campaign modes of those games, but I get demolished online.

I'd say slightly above average, though god dammit there are games that I just suck at. I swear to christ Dota-type games are just not for me. I enjoy them, and when playing with a team of friends they're pretty awesome, but god help me if I'm playing against someone who knows what they're doing.

That being said, I've also had very mixed results in various online shooters. CoD4, Halo:Reach, Counter Strike, TF2, any Battelfield? Come at me, bro. Any CoD beyond 4, L4D, Gears of War? I just don't get it, I cannot win a game in one of those to save my life.

RTS are actually some of my bread and butter. SC2 is really one of the only exceptions to that, out of RTS I've played. SupCom, DoW 1+2, C&C, CoH, and even warcraft 3? I'm pretty damn awesome at, but god help me I just cannot get better at SC2.

Single-player games are kinda hard to gauge, though I generally play every game on hard at least to give it a try, though I don't ever really seek out games just because they're "hard", I seek them out because they're fun, and if they're challenging in the right ways, that's just a plus.

EDIT- Also, I see a few people mentioning the new Deus Ex as "really hard", and even having to drop it down to easy a few times. I dunno, I feel like I've just been really lucky, or maybe it's because I really haven't been playing it like a stealth game, except in the couple sections where it's "advised". I'm about 8 hours or so in on "Give me Deus Ex" and I haven't had too much trouble that wasn't shotgun to the face related. Enemies with shotguns are still douches, no matter what game you're playing.

It differs from game to game, but generally; no. There aren't many games I feel deserve enough of my time for me to actually good at (I'm not being elitist; you need to spend time doing anything before you get good at it). I got horribly addicted to COD4 and World at War when they came out (and COD was still fun) though, and I was pretty amaze-balls at the latter, but the only game I thought I was above average at was Uncharted 2. I liked the mix of third person shooting, climbing and stealth, and it turns out I'm pretty good at the three.

Honestly, a game like wow is probably the lowest bar to measure your skills against, as it requires almost no skill to be good. If you want to challenge your abilities pick E-Sport titles like Starcraft 2, DotA, CoD, Quake etc. Because there skills is all that matters.

In every game i play, ever, i find my limit eventually. A point in a game i can´t get through or some challenges i cant finish.
Like now, i'm playing Gran Turismo 5. Do not expect to find many fellow GT-fanboys around here.. But anyways, i have 99% game completion but i met my limit when it came to the last 3 challenges, which involves driving against time in the specially designed monster of a car, the Red Bull X2010. Now it is suddently not a regular car simulator, but a game of perfect timing and reactions, where i fail.

My k/d on MW2 and Black Ops was somewhere around 0.85 so I suppose I suck.

Nah, it depends on your circumstances (e.g. other team's players, game mode makes a big difference, your own team) and also remember that while the average K/D may be 1, the average player doesn't necessarily have a K/D of 1. For example, the skill level of good players help filter off "bad" players that simply won't play due to the fact that they are getting owned by very good players, leaving a higher proportion of good players still playing the game (and probably owning you).

Also, you get better with practice. I used to be however around 0.8 K/D but with a lotta game hours, I got to around ~1.37 K/D (yeah, not much, but not bad either).

I could make the Mario Kart 64 , koopa beach jump WITHOUT an item boost EVERYTIME. Same with the Wario Stadium wall bounce, BOTH WAYS.

If you don't know what any of that means , the you're either 14, or NOT hardcore and gnarley.
