I'll give it a chance, but I suspect that I'll cancel my subscription when I've beaten the story on both sides. Honestly, what I want is KOTOR III, but since that's not happening, I'll give this a chance, but I'm still not totally convinced that anyone wanted this more than KOTOR III, including Bioware.

Honestly, that's my biggest concern, that even if it turns out well, even if it's paced better than KOTOR I and carries more philosophical depth than KOTOR II, that it will collapse under it's own weight, because everyone will stop playing after the main story, and the game they really wanted, is complete. Not only would that mean that future gamers won't get to finish the trilogy, but it could mean that Bioware loses a devastating amount of money, all because of some idiotic big wigs marketing decision, made in arrogance, to attempt to seize the Warcraft throne, only to be punished for his hubris and greed, cast out in the cold, and dragging our beloved Bioware in with him(Or her).

There is a silver lining, I doubt Bioware would agree to a risk this big unless they were confidant in their ability and passionate about their cause, that would just be stupid.

I hope their hearts are in it, or this might be it for them.

heeels yes i will. KOTOR 2 sucked, they seem like they have really made a lot of advancements since then.

im just so glad they didnt make KOTOR 3, as nice as that would have been, how much better is it to have a new KOTOR game that is constantly expanding, and i can play with friends?

the downside? i live in Australia, the land of the deprived. although i am thinking of importing it.

I followed it from from the first second they started talking about it. Got 4 weekend beta invites. Watched every video. Read every article. Read the endless feedback from showcases/beta.

SWTOR is a generic run of the mill MMO that adds nothing new of value the majority of the MMO community wants.
It was created by a single player rpg developer who simply doesn't understand the MMO genre.

Even if friends were begging me to play, I couldn't justify paying for another subscription based MMO when it doesn't add anything new and Guild Wars 2 will be out in 2012. A game that appears to be pushing boundaries and innovating the genre.(no sub required)

I believe SWTOR will be considered a massive failure within 1 year if release, just in time for Guild Wars 2.

I'm waiting until I have some spare cash, since lately I've been finding myself penny pinching much more often than usual. Even though that's not stopping me from buying the dinner of a lady friend I'm finding myself attracted to. I need to get my priorities str...

Considering they are not, as far as I can tell, offering a local release here in AU anytime soon.. my friend works for Game and they don't even have a release date, despite the fact it is blatantly out on the 20th and people are already playing.... I'll be holding back until I see how they treat their non core audience.

I want to play, it looks interesting, but I'll have to jump through some hoops to buy it and that's unacceptable.. an MMO has zero valid reason to limit or restrict release dates by region.

Would if it weren't sub based, but I cannot and will not pay continuously for a game that will on-off take my time as other titles are released. If it were one up front payment, I would, but sub based games I will not play.

I would, but MMOs with subscriptions are gross wastes of money. In a year of playing one game I've bought it three times over.

Sucks because it looks pretty good, but no game is worth over a hundred dollars a year.

I'll use WoW as an example since you generalised it to MMOs and WoW is the easiest example.

Yes in the space of a year you've bought it 3 times or whatever. But in that year it will go through multiple huge patches adding a tonne of new content, it's a persistent world, there's no end to the game. There are no 3 games that you could buy (unless you bought Skyrim 3 times....maybe) that can provide as much content and things to do than a MMO can.

I'll give you that, definitely. But I personally dislike grinding, repetition, and numbers numbers numbers. Because that "content" you speak of really is just that, more often than not. A new raid. New dungeons. New quests. New classes. It's generally the same kinds of things, just more of them.

But hey, different strokes for different folks and all that.

I'd rather pay for three different games than persist in the same game for that much, but again, that just boils down to my personal taste.

Also, I generalized it to subscription-based MMOs. Not just MMOs. MMOs are great, just not worth it to me when it comes to subscription costs.

It's like the people who say "KotOR 3 will never happen" have forgotten about the console market. Bioware is probably making KoTOR 3 for next-gen consoles right now, combining some of the material they've written for the flop WoW clone with an upgraded version of the engine used in Mass Effect.

I wasn't going to. Whenever I've played a subscription based MMORPG I've played for a month or two forgot to cancel the subscription three months later gone back to it again, played for a week, cancelled, then two months later decided to go back and repeat the cycle. Plus I've got a tonne of games unfinished, Christmas games to play, games from the Christmas before lasts Steam Sale (and last Christmas's and Easter...)

So with all of that I was going to give it a miss and wait for Guild Wars 2...but...It's Bioware, and they've never disappointed me, they've drawn me in, spun me around and stopped me sleeping because I've genuinely regretted actions I had taken while playing and their results, and I've only heard good things about the game, so maybe.

No. I have no interest in the MMO aspect and I refuse to pay mothly to play a singleplayer game. So if/when I can play it to experience the story without the added hassle of having to deal with monthly payments or other players, I'm in.

It's a spiritual successor to the KOTOR in a similar way that Dragon Age: Origins is a successor to Baldur's Gate. If you've enjoyed KOTOR's storytelling, then there should be enough in SWTOR to justify the entry fee and possibly an extra month of time to punch through the story.

As far as the whole "I forgot to unsubscribe thing", I typically pay only through time cards, which in turn requires me to make an affirmative action to keep paying for it. In short, I get to choose when I want to play and how often I want to pay for the game.

In the meantime, I'm hoping my online retailer hasn't canceled my pre-order for my collector's edition.

Nope, ditched my pre-order, closed my guild, and closed my account. Not worth it, and I was in love with KOTR 1 and 2 and thought I would love any game set in the era, but after beta-ing I found that there i nothing enjoyable about the game that would make it worth whatever they want/month.

Nope I generally hate anything bioware makes due to a rather bland story and unlikeable characters. With what I've seen from Jessie Cox and Total Biscuit I was only interested in watching the video for their commentary and when they were silent I just skipped the story.

I would if it weren't an MMO; that's not a 'it should have been KOTOR 3' stab (although I would really have liked that more). The reason I'm not getting it is because its an MMO, which are kind of pointless where I live because the internet quality is just... urgh.

You are completely and 100% wrong on the first part, KOTOR 2 is referenced, albeit not as much as KOTOR 1 is, but it is there. The Exile is in the game, as is Revan.

Also, linking to old videos pointing out how the animations look bad? How about you link something that isn't 2 years old? The game looks and plays great and the animtions are some of the best I've seen for the genre. As far as I know they are all mo'capped as well, very high quality. It makes playing a melee class a lot of fun.

Okay, I put my hands up there but you do kind of prove my point; since this is apparently KoTORs' 3-10 condensed into one box, shouldn't it refer to KoTOR 2 first and foremost, to make the continuation clearer if nothing else?

As for the animations, what threw me is how they talked about the quality of said animations totally straight-faced whilst showing that sub-par footage, which rather gave me the impression that they're somehow satisfied with it.

Ultimately though, whatever the merits of the game, I'm automatically biased against it because I'm still bitter from Star Trek Online; in every mission, I had this nagging knowledge in the back of my mind - which spoiled my fun - that elsewhere, in another instance aka pocket dimension, someone else was doing the exact same thing and that I was making absolutely no difference to the game universe at all! And my suspicion is that TOR will just be the exact same tired old start-finish-reset quest model, despite the inclusion of Mass Effect-style branching dialogue, especially since I found that the Guild Wars 2 website already describes, in detail, how it's Dynamic Events System works and that game isn't even at the beta stage yet, while the TOR site still seems rather tight-lipped about how it's own system works.

That and, STO also taught me that paying more than once (or worse, buying a lifetime subscription) for a game is never worth it (except for the eventually-upcoming Infinity: The Quest for Earth), another reason I'm going for Guild Wars 2 instead.
