Fatal Frame scares me partly because ghosts scare the crud out of me.

I find Silent Hill to be pretty scary though too. Mainly because you have no idea what's going on when you hear those weird noises and when you see what's making them, you STILL don't know what's going on!

I'd say the atmosphere is one of the biggest parts. Along with your sense of helplessness. Obviously, if I can kill the enemy easily, I'm not going to be afraid. If they can kill me easily then I'm going to be scared shitless of them.

Hmm... Dead space and Penumbra are two scary games that I've played recently. Dead space is much more "jump scare" based while Penumbra is more about atmosphere.

it's funny that nobody mentioned the underrated game called "Call of Cthulhu: Dark corners of the Earth" that was a insane game! hahaha
I am thinking of buying this, you would recommend? The main reason I have not is I am so weary of bethesda games crashing on me. I have had crashes at least once every 2 hours with both fallout3 and oblivion, and a crash to desktop kinda ruins the immersion. Did you find it stable?
YES buy it! I have it somewhere on the original xbox. Its awesome cause you dont even get a gun till about a third of the way into the game. Plus if you let your character see too much gorey stuff he starts to go mad. Like if you leave him looking at a hanging corpse for long enough he'll start to black out =)

I'm such a high strung person that just about nay game with a creepy atmosphere will scare me. I even had to quit playing halo and halo 2 during some of the flood scenes from being scared.

Its all in atmosphere. Its gotta make you feel helpless and alone and no game does that better than Silent Hill 2.

The last good horror game I played was Dead Space because that game make you feel helpless. Yeah, you've got weapons , but these creatures can pop out at any corner and can easily kill you in one hit.

Condemned did a pretty good job at that by making you feel alone and scared for your life, but suffered from awkward controls and its supernatural theme towards the end.

There is a game that you can buy of Steam that my brother showed me. It was a game played in a first person perspective and you were in a coal-mine looking for something about your fathers death if I recall correctly. The idea of it was all based around stealth, and you couldn't actually fight your enemies. In-fact, if you looked at them your character would panic and then the enemy would see you.

I can't remember what it was called, but it sure freaked the hell out of me.
Forbidden siren?
Vampire rain?

And btw, scariest game i've ever played was PROJECT ZERO [Known as Fatal Frame in USA, because they always change the name for the usa]

For me, atmosphere is what a game needs to be truly scary.

Think of it, long dark corridor with some eerie music or no music at all (maybe the sound of water dripping in the background), where anything could jump out at you at any moment.

The scariest game I've played was Silent Hill 2. Quite frankly it is the only game that actually scared the shit out of me. I'm sorry, but if I told you EXACTLY what made Silent Hill 2 scary, that would ruin the experience for those who haven't played it yet.

It has so much atmosphere that I have a constant feeling of that there is someone behind me wielding a machete...
They really were pretty good. He has a good feel for classic adventure gaming. Something I miss terribly.

Though, to be fair, at the end the game devolved into a very subpar fps game which disapointed me. Everything leading up to that however was very, very good.

Eternal darkness where the game pretends to turn your tv off just when your about to be attacked.

That seriously fecked me up.

Agreed. This is the only game to truly scare me.
Must... resist... wall-o-text... review...

In short, yes. Amazingly made game: the best use of camera angles I have seen in a game, as well as the most effective gameplay mechanic for absolute terror: the fact that you actually have to go down into first-person to combat the ghosts (when you're already mortified) is absolute brilliance.

Stupid Nintendo, canceling the fourth one in the US...

I'm a naturally on-edge person. If you sneak up behind me and just say "hey", I was jump and possibly yell in surprise. If you touch me and I didn't see you there, I will hit you (just ask my familiy members) out of reaction. So I just cannot handle horror games.

Playing BioShock, knowing that there would be a insane deformed person around about every corner, I moved at a snails pace turned on all the lights in the room, blasted non-threatening music (like She and Him), but still quit when I got to first boss (the doctor?). I don't know why, but those types of games just give me a lot of anxiety and I end up not even having fun. I know BioShock isn't even a game most people find scary.

Funny story: I don't like zombies. Its something about the lost humanity that just freaks me out. I played Dead Rising my freshman year of college and it took 10 minutes for my roommate at the time to convince me to enter the mall from the rooftop in the beginning.

Do you perhaps mean Siren: New Translation? I think there's a part in that game where you travel into a coal mine...
Siren: New Translation (Or Blood Curse, depending on where you live I guess) was exclusive to the PS3 I thought? I have the game, but have not played it yet.

God I have been trying to beat that game for like six months but every time I start playing it I get so uneasy I have to play something else instead haha.

Have you played condemned? That's a scary game, i like that.
That game was pretty freaky, well the first one at least.
The second one was awesome up until it turned into a shooter, and when you could scream and make people's heads explode. The first half of the game was better than Condemned 1 IMO.

This gen is sorely lacking good survival horror games, too bad considering how many good ones came out on ps2 and gamecube.
