Are you tired of Aquaman defenders?

Let me start off by saying that I'm not prejudiced against comic Aquaman fans. I mean them no ill will or disrespect here.

I'm a non-comic fan male who lives in California (not the most open minded of places when it comes to certain entertainment mediums) and I've faced my fair share of discrimination. I've been called nerdy and proud of in a manner meant to have negative connotations for how much I talk about stuff like this since I do like the animated and live action adaptations of comic books. I've been called a terrible person for standing up for the overall group of people comic Aquaman fans often fall into though as a subgroup of that bigger group of course.

Like people say about video games, labeling mediums and the people who enjoy them as evil or calling out things you've never bothered to learn about because of generational differences and various factors is a form of label that gets slapped on just about anyone who dares suggest there are good things in these mediums, but come on. I'm a fairly laid back guy on these sort of things and understand passion, but I still can't help but be tired by the amount of people who get offended by next to nothing nowadays involving Aquaman.

They get so angry that Aquaman gets no respect as a powerful, legitimate superhero in his own right. It mostly steams from some campy animated super hero show from decades ago called Superfriends making him look useless, possibly subtly insulting him, and some statements made on The Big Bang Theory, which they shouldn't acknowledge anyway because it's a very bad, very insulting excuse for a show that practically insults nerds and/or geeks rather than laughs at them affably. The general public does not have this huge image of a lame Aquaman in their mind anymore if they ever did. The general public probably does not even think on Aquaman at all assuming they still know he exists at all. If they ever did have a negative image of him, it was during the campy decade. Maybe saying the comic fans "won" and don't realize it is a bit of a stretch as it wasn't even a real struggle, but man, it's such a big deal to them from what I've seen online. They're definitely in their own little bubble on that issue and take it to heart in ways they should as comic fans, but mostly in ways they definitely should not. It's almost as if people just camp out at their keyboards waiting for something to get offended at in regards to Aquaman. If something comes off as even vaguely exclusionary/insensitive of/to Aquaman, it basically get's stoned until it's forced to change.

I understand that there are a lot of people who don't know what they're talking about out there, but in terms of blatant, unfair, sarcasitc, disrespect of Aquman type poeple, they are now in the minority. You won. But it feels like you can't say anything about Aquaman without earning the ire of the Aquaman defender in the form of keyboard warrior. Have you never stepped outside of your house and seen how people behave outside of the online community? Do you not understand the disconnect between real life and the internet? How much is enough?

Please keep things civil and stay on topic.

P.S.: For those who may have realized it: Yes, this is a spoof of this [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.859892-Are-you-tired-of-SJW?page=1] discussion. I even paraphrased some of the OT's OP as well as one of my own posts in that thread! :D For those who may not know, well now you know. If the OP of that thread sees this, I mean no ill will nor subtle mockery. I just wanted to do a lighthearted thing that resembles that discussion though admiddetly it is partially intended as a joke at that discussion's expense. Though, I really do think Aquaman comic fans need to step back and relax a bit. I've always wanted to start a spoof discussion and this site could use something a little more positive with all the negative discussions in the forums though some may take this the wrong way.

I think that Justice League, the animated series, had the best incarnation of Aquaman in years: An Atlantean King that wanted the best for his people, but was ultimately something of a hardass. And, while I don't remember the circumstances behind it, at some point he had lost a hand, and had to replace it on the fly (If I remember correctly) with a harpoon.

The Harpoon Hand alone is enough to elevate even a wimpy version of Aquaman into an automatic badass, but the fact that he was hardly a passive hero helped. Then again, it's been years since I've seen Justice League, so I can't say if he was a particularly active member. Regardless, that version was hardly the ineffectual hero that most would make him out to be, and that was arguably his best character design. Bare-chested, long rocker hair, and a pretty nice beard and mustache, he looked like a man, and that's without the kickass Harpoon.

He isn't my favorite DC hero by any stretch, but I can't say that I didn't like the concept, in that case anyway.

So now that I know this is a spoof of something else I don't really know how to respond. I like Aquaman and think he definitely deserves his spot on the Justice League and should be given more respect so of course I promote Aquaman defenders but at the same time all super heroes get mocked at times. Batman and Superman would not be such universally popular characters if it was not for things like Hishe's Super Cafe series. Everyone loves the Dark Knight but all you have to do to mock Batman is put on his over the top growl voice.

Overall I think the internet should just continue it's natural course.

I really liked the Justice League cartoon version of Aquaman, he's my second favourite Aquaman. My first is from the cartoon Batman the Brave and the Bold where he's just the cheeriest ************ in town, always with a song and dance ready.

Nope, he deserves his time in the sun where as Im just really gotten sick of Batman and all these darp brooding totally not emo "realistic" heroes. And its not like hed have nothing to do:hes got a big super ability set and hes taken the likes of Poseidon so he can maybe take on the old Gods on his own or with his souped up armies of merbeast & merpeople

Eh, I think he's a boring hero that should make way for other more interesting ones, but then so is Batman and any number of others.

Let them do what they want. Aquaman isn't that popular so having defenders is good. Those who need to step back are Superman and Batman defenders. Both of them are not as great as you think, but they are popular enough so you don't need to defend them from everybody.

I don't understand what people have against BBT. It is by no means an accurate representation of geek/nerd culture, it's far too many stereotypes, and the number of tropes is beyond reasonable. To me, however, these things haven't stopped it from making me laugh.

Eh, I still think the majority of people and even nerds only know about him that he can speak to fish and is lame.

Which is unfair.
I don't think most people are aware of the better stories and stuff with him.
Even if they don't consider him superlame, he is still not well-known.

I suggest we come up with snappy names for both sides that let us reduce people into caricatures without considering them as individuals.

I'm thinking "AquaFriends" vs "TBBTers"

I think it's the fans. You don't seem to have so many people saying "I think this is a funny show", you tend to get people saying "This is a hilarious show, and portrays nerds perfectly, definitely watch this".

If it was said to be just another sitcom, there'd be no issue.

Fair enough, fans tend to go totally overboard. I DO think it's hilarious, but I know people's opinions will not be swayed by saying "you should watch this, and if you don't like it you're stupid". Saying that only makes things worse.

I think they're trying to rectify this in New 52, where he is actually a badass, but from what I've read (Justice League 3) he may have just become another grim, gritty hero. I get that what happened to Ocean master and atlantis sucks, but I don't like aquaman as a brooding king. A warrior king yes, but I'd rather see him as Theoden from return of the king than the 2 towers if that makes sense.

He lost his hand when his brother staged a coup. He chained him to a rock over a volcano and left his 6month old son there too. Aquaman was unable to free 1 hand from the chains and used a metal emblem on his belt to hack his arm off in order to save his son from the volcano.

He added the harpoon after he returned home with his son to get a bit of treatment. So the use of a harpoon over some other kind of prosthetic always seemed more symbolic to me.

Yes, this version of Aquaman was pretty badass. DC animated universe did a LOT of things right. Slightly off topic but DCA universe did the best Flash I've ever seen. By far I think the Flash was the best member of the league, and whenever the show gave him screen time it showed how human he was. No one else in the show seemed like as real a person as Wally.

Aquaman Defenders???

That really riles me up because people don't even know what they are talking about!!

Aquaman was *never* in the Defenders, that was Namor!!

Namor is a completely different character! He can fly! And he has black hair and pointy ears! Totally different!

Come on people, Defenders was a Marvel comics publication, Aquaman is a DC comics property!

Everyone really needs to take a look at what they are reading before they weigh in on topics like these! ;)

I don't really mind it, as long as they aren't defending this horrible game because that would be bad. Seriously, Aquaman: Battle for Atlantis is probably one of the worst games I've ever played, and I was playing Superman 64 alongside this game and had more fun with Superman than I did with Aquaman and that's saying something.
