Let me say this first: I love my grandparents, all four of 'em. German or American, they've all been very kind to me. But lately, my American grandparents (thusly called Nana and Popop) have been a bit... off. I haven't seen them in years, as they live in retirement all the way in Florida. They're reaching their 90's and 100's, and since then have been losing themselves. Here's something you may find amusing:

My birthday was last August. Having not heard from the grandparents in a while, I was surprised when a letter from them arrived in the mail- oh, but it wasn't for me. No, it was for my sister, wishing her a happy birthday! And though the letter was sent in August, they dated it back to May. My sister's birthday is in April.

And of course, enclosed in the birthday card was a cheque. With ten dollars on it. Needless to say, we had a good giggle.

Anyway, what about you? Provided your grans and gramps are still around, how are they faring? Have they done anything... Odd, lately?

Still alive. Still sane. And they still have the vitality of adults in their 50s despite being over 60 and 70 respectively. At least that's on my mother's side, the one on my father's side are kinda dead and buried.

Well, my grandparents on my mother's side (all three of them) are doing just fine I think.

My grandparents on my dad's side, I have no freaking idea because I have never met them. Didn't even know about them until about 5 or 6 years ago.

My grandparent's on my sister's dad's side (who I thought was my dad until I was 16) are pretty crazy. My grandfather (who is dead now) kidnapped my grandmother and almost killed her I think. My grandmother is pretty crazy too. My sister calls her Satan. I guess I am glad I am not blood-related to them.

My grandfather is one badass guy. He served in the Army in the 50's, drove a taxi for a decade in NYC, just celebrated his 65th birthday, and he still runs the local and state Marathons, all while being a heavy fan of Guinness.

Well, my grandparents on my dad's side are fine, but I'm almost positive my grand-parents on my mom's side are a bit racist. . .

I have a grandmother who means well, but is the most batshit insane person on the planet.

She's tried to do laundry in the sink, only to keep the faucet running and flood the bathroom.

And you know what? She did it FOUR TIMES.

She always tries to impose her own little version of "order" on our family every time she visits, and my mother hates her passionately for it. My aunts and uncles on her side have already stated that she's no longer around their homes- my house is the only one she can still visit, lucky me! I once even confronted her about her dicktatorship status in the house and doing crazy stuff has gotten her a bad reputation, even with us.

You know what? The woman was smiling the entire time. I screamed at her, "WHY ARE YOU SMILING?!"

At which point, she screamed back, "I'M NOT SMILING!" and the smile was replaced with a look that seemed fearful.

She's nuts. So freaking nuts. It's a testament to my parents' generation that they managed to turn out fine after growing up with her.

My grandfather is a medical doctor who is doing fine and at times can be pleasant to talk to.

They all snuffed it I'm afraid.

10 years this October and November for my Nana and Grandad (in respective order)

She drank her self to death (which is the reason I don't drink) and my Grandad just died of old age.

Biodad's (my real dad) parents I have no idea and my dad's (step dad) mam died before I was born and his dad died a few years ago.

Both my grandmothers were pretty normal, along with my grandfather on my mother's side, my grandfather on my father's side on the other hand...well...

He's a hyperconservative, southern babtist nutjob, who hasn't stopped building on his large ranch since long before I was born (It currently boasts a five story tower of steel, a pair of two story farm houses, a 150 foot allumium lined slide, several small shacks, a 50 foot neon cross, an 8.5 foot high electrified fence, at least two dozen hunting towers and other structures out in the woods, and a two-hundred foot earthen dam holding back a 180 foot deep lake). In addition to his building fixation, he hates all forms of sugar and sugar like substances and will not allow them on his property, doesn't believe in modern medicine or medication, owns at least 37 rifles, 20 revolvers (ranging from 9mm to .480 Ruger), two AK-47s, a minimum of a gross of grenades of varrious types, and at least 100 lbs. of various explosives (Mostly fireworks), and is in the process of renovating the local church by adding a 50 foot steeple, climbing wall, and gymnasium. He is currently approuching 70 years of age.

One day he will fall off the top, On that day he will realise his mistake. :p

Just to scare you, You're most likely to turn into your dad. And so's your dad. Panic?

He already fell off the tower while mounting a motorized winch on the exterior, top floor, walked away without so much as a scratch. It scared the hell out of us but he just laughed it off.

As for me becoming my dad/my dad becoming him, I think we're both pretty safe. My dad's a moderate liberal, a suburban based computer programmer, and I can't remeber him raising his voice or doing anything crazy in my lifetime. As for me, I'm a political progressive, and while I may err on the less-sane side of things every once and a while, it's usually very brief and always constructive. That and the fact that niether of us are babtists both I and my father love cake, ice-cream, soda, and other sugary things, niether of us is very handy with weapons, and the undeniabvle fact that I cant stand working with my hands. So yeah, we're basically safe from grandad's madness. (For now...)

Well my grandma is better than me at crosswords and word puzzles and such so she's still pretty sharp.
