I try not to read too much about games that aren't released yet, unless it's something that I'm really looking forward too (see: Mass Effect 3). Purely for the reason that time seems to slow down the closer the release date is.

But here I am, reading up on Marvel vs Capcom 3. Looking at all the characters, seeing who I should put in my team (Amaterasu is a given) and just generally obsessing over it.

So, as a rule of thumb, do you avoid reading up on games in fine detail before they're released? Whether it be to avoid hype or to avoid the slowing of time, share your stories.

I read only what is in magazines like Game Informer. I don't research the game online because I have had a few more games spoiled that way. Looking at you Singularity.(GLARE)

I generally only watch video previews, or read previews of the game if it is in the monthly Game Informer. Besides no. I like to keep each game a (relative) surprise when I get it, so I do not spoil it for myself.

I have avoided ALL Portal 2 hype and adverts.
Really don't want to get my hopes up, or have surprises wrecked for me. I can't get my heart broke again...

Some games are weird like that. I know I'll get Portal 2 on day one of release but I feel no incentive to read up on it. There are quite a few times this has happened, like with Fallout:NV for instance.

Oh, yeah I knew about that without reading it in the previews. I think it might have been in the manual. Nonetheless, it didn't really surprise me.

I read up on a lot of information about games, whether I want to buy them or not, because then I might find something that I really want. I'm not sure why I do this, but I just kinda do.

Always happens to me. I avoid reading too much into upcoming titles, but then I cave in and just go all out looking for trailers, previews, interviews etc and then end up waiting months before being able to find out for myself.

Thankfully I'm quite discerning with new releases though. I'll only buy if I'm absolutely sure that I'll enjoy it.

I keep track of my RSS feed for incoming game announcements. I'll look at details to get a general feel for what the game is. The genre, interesting gimmick, what sort of direction they're going with the idea, nothing at all revealing the plot or anything near important, just a check to see if it looks cool to me. Then I immediately ignore it. Which is really easy, since it never comes up on my RSS feed again. I'm also the only one out of my friends that keeps track of games coming out. The last game that was hyped for me, was Cataclysm, the wow expansion, because most of my friends play WoW. ..So I'd say I successfully avoid anything on everything hype-wise. Even with coming here.

I used to but now-a-days I'm either to busy to read up on new games or just don't care.
