So i know your probably going to think there is no discussion here, but hear me out.

Recently Ive been getting involved in discussions with people with different views. The problem that i've had is that people seem to jump to conclusions without getting the full Picture.

Ill give you a story example:

Your watching TV - More specifically a police show. You switch on to see a police dog handler jump out of his car & start screaming at someone just walking down the street. The screams consist of orders to get on the ground. When the person (who obviously looks surprised) doesn't comply and asks whats happening the officer sprays the person with captor spray (mace in the USA).

Ok, So given what you've just read, what are your opinions? Please post them under Bullet point one.

Now, lets continue with the story:

So, Theres then a re-cap - There was a bank robbery in the area where the assailant used an axe. The person the policeman stopped was the robber, and he was armed with an axe.

Now post your opinion on bullet point two.

See how your opinion may differ given the circumstances?

-----

The difference between my example & my point is that in my example we get a full story.

When it comes to any story portrayed in the media we are only getting one side (and if what ive heard about fox, Not always the best side (joke)) of the story.

Ok, So what am i getting at I hear you asking? Well what do you do if a subject catches your eye? Have you ever jumped to conclusions about something then proven wrong, And then do you fight to the death in the face of overwhelming evidence or, do you accept you were wrong?

Discuss, and no flaming please!

Edited to make a little bit more sense (sorry about that!)

Who robs a bank with an axe?

Edit: And having managed to do so, why would he just be walking down the street with it?

This is a very confusing topic but so far as i understand you're asking what i would do if someone was adamant about their opinion, but it was based on misinformation? Well i would probably try and tell them there is more to the story, if people think they were lied to or mislead they will listen more often than if you tell them they are wrong upfront. Its a delicate business but it can be done.

Oh and yeah, who robs a bank with an ax?

How many times have you had an argument with someone who has been misinformed, but they are adamant that they are right?

What do you do if you hear about an injustice (especially on the internet), Or if someone rants about something? How often do you take things at face value?

Discuss, and no flaming please!
If its a situation similar to that, or a clear cut debate, then my thought process looks something like this.

What do I know?
Was the reaction of the defendant justified by what I know?
Do I need more information for/against both-parties?
Do I agree with either party?
What are my reasons for dis/agreeing?
Formulate Argument.
(heap on the rhetoric)

Spetznaz:p

Well when I hear a story in the news I usually do take into consideration it's one side of the story, and I think people are adamant on there there views because people don't like to be proven wrong.

I think what he means is that how would you argue with someone who didn't have the full context of a story, and drew an opinion from a very small portion of that story.

He wasn't alone in the robbing of a bank. ¬¬ There were others (but when he was confronted he was with one other unarmed man, Not relevant really to the point i was trying too make)

Well, if he robs a bank with an axe, he might not be exactly sane. Which would also explain walking around with an axe.

When someone is misinformed about something, I usually try to tell them the exact truth (at least what I know of the subject). This is because that when I am misinformed myself (shit happens to everyone sometimes), I appreciate getting informed, rather than being screamed at.

Not trying to be a *****, but I'm not really clear on what your point was.

If it's that people ought to be informed before passing judgment, well, yeah. Just looks at the current American health care reform debate.

The fact that all you saw at first was a policeman spraying a person who we thought was innocent in the face with Captor spray. Which is wrong...But see how one other piece of information changes the situation completely.

I'm going to go with what this guy says since I can't make heads or tails with the topic of this page.

Anyway, if someone was arguing with me, regardless of whether I'm right or wrong I would just yell and throw things, generally be a complete a-hole until they admitted I was right.

Alright I didn't really understand what was going on in your examples...but I get what your asking. I try my best to never jump to conclusions, people do just that to me all too often. Example:I tell somone I'm a Satanist, they immideatley think I worship some demon, sacrifice people for magic rituals and hate all christians. Truth:ALL OF THAT IS WRONG. So I try to get all my facts straight before I argue any points, and if it so happens that I do jump to a conclusion, I will accept the fact that I'm wrong if somone gives me evidence.
