How does the extra content work? Is it unlockable, already stored on the machine, or is it a key for a download?
Could be either. Does it really make a difference?
yes, I refuse to purchase material that I have to pay extra to use.
You'd be paying extra for a download anyway. You don't need the DLC.
I was never planning on getting the DLC. That's why I would be irritated if I ended up paying for DLC that I couldn't use, until I "purchased" it.
You didn't pay for the DLC in the first place. The development cost of the DLC is covered by the price that they charge. The game doesn't cost more because the data is on the disc rather than a server.

just. say. no.

say no to pre-purchasing, dlc, exclusive content, tf2 hat deals, and especially pre-purchasing.

I am going to try my balls off (after pre-purchasing From Dust on Steam...) to wait for the reviews to come in to buy something.

And if it can't hold it's own without some probably real useless tacky bonus map, that you could probably download somehow if you wanted to, but there's not much point... then it isn't really a great game is it.

Is Christopher Nolan only gonna show The Dark Knight Rises with some bonus scenes and a free Batman mask if you watch it only at a Hyots Cinema?

Here's a question: which Robin? Cause I gotta tell you, that could be a deal breaker. I might pay to play as Damien or Todd, hell, maybe even Dick... but not Tim. These things matter!
Wow. I believe this is the first time I've actually heard somebody say something specifically negative about Tim as Robin. I, personally, would rather play as either Dick or Tim than Batman himself.

It's funny that I've never seen anyone bash Pokémon for this even though it's been limiting content since the first Pokémon game.

When I purchase a game from a retailer, I'm paying the retailer money for the box, disc and its contents. It should not be assumed that I paid for only part of the contents of the disc.

I guess what I'm talking about is unlockable content in a game that you already own (it's already in the game files), but you can't use until you pay money for it.

I dunno about that, I got 20% off for pre-purchasing Red Orchestra 2, and while I love the game, a 20% discount is always a nice thing to have. =p

But granted I wouldn't do it for a game I'm on the fence about, or haven't played a direct prequel of, then I'd indeed wait out the reviews and/or a Steam sale.

The gaming community has been bullied into pre-ordering games with gamestop for a while now. We see this in almost all big releases these days. Such as Arkham City, you receive a joker carnival map when you pre-order with gamestop. BUT WAIT!!!!

If you pre-order at best buy you get fucking robin as a playable character.
Isn't the purpose of these pre-order, extra content bullshit, to get the hardcore fans to buy from a certain retailer???

WELL WHAT ARE ARKHAM CITY"S HARDCORE FANS TO DO!!!????
Buy two copies of the game to receive full content??

I say "fuck that" publishers need to get their shit together and stop whoring their games to retailers that pay them money to take content away from everyone else!
...Thoughts?

:sorry for the double post it told me there was an error the first time
The purpose of a pre-order is as follows;

1) Ensure you get a game in-case the game sells out quickly or isn't mass produced.
2) Allowing you time to pay for a game fully over time not $60 all at once. $5, $3, $14, ect
3) Bonus content is NOT required for a pre-order but is like a box of cereal toy. Nothing special but nice to have and at times forgotten over time.

That is pretty much it, I don't understand why people such as yourself or others 'freak out' over a pre-order. You are not paying more just making it easier on yourself at times while helping the publishers with their inventory (except for big name games)

To correct you on somethings.

Hardcore Arkham City Fans do NOT exit...game is not out yet. Arkham Asylum fans and Batman fans exist right now. The get COLLECTORS and LIMITED EDITION forms of the games...pre-orders are nothing special.

Many games do this, nothing to be surprised about really. So you get a Joker Map and Animated Series skin for Gamestop, you get Robin for Best Buy, you get something else for Amazon, Wal-Mart, ect ect. Marketing and the deals each company makes with the publisher. It is getting tiresome of seeing posts like these or people saying pre-orders are scams. Its like dealing with a HIGHLY political or religious person. Common sense does not exist and they will forever believe what they want to ignore all else.

Batman Arkham City will be epic. Batman is awesome. I care not for the preorder BS as it will all be available eventually more than likely. With that being said, Why does a grown man live in a giant mansion with a little boy and takes him into a cave and makes him wear weird costumes. Creepy is all I'm saying.
Because a long time ago people never had such perverse thoughts about things and there weren't that many sickos. So if you were a rich man who happened to own a cave extension of your mansion wouldn't you play imagination with your son or have a tea party while wearing the 'crown' with your daughter?

I remember where you would buy a game with all the content already in it not like now where the developers seem to hold back abot 10% of the content and go "we'll make tem pay more for this mwahahaha".

I understand where you get dlc for games like fallout and others where there is too much content too go on the disc but its like with the new gears of war epc just gave us half the gun camo and are charging us for the othe half if we want it.

Just a prediction, but they will probably release Robin and the Joker maps as DLC in about a next few months after the release.

How about on a completely different topic, but still very WTF.

PC Gamers have to wait until November to play Arkham City while Xbox and PS3 owners can not only play Arkham City in October but they can also buy a Collector's Edition.

... that's some WTF.

WHY DON'T THEY WANT MY MONEY?!

I guess (and guess only) that companies prefer guaranteed $50 and £40 incomes than PC gamers who play a great deal, but dont fork out the big bucks. All PC games in the UK seem to be at least £10 ($15ish) cheaper on PC than consoles and so take the $$$ cha-ching approach to releases.

"bullied into pre-ordering"?

I'm sorry. What?
If you really care about this kind of content wouldn't you pre-order the game anyway, since you are obviously going to get it because you're a fan of the franchise?

Pre-ordering literally requires little to no effort on your part, and it doesn't cost any more than buying it normally. Additional content issues aside (I disagree with the "not a full game" mentality that so many people have, but that's a really tired argument), why do people demonize the practice of pre-ordering?

I'd honestly like to know.

All these pre-order bonuses are just to get people to buy the game new and not wait to buy it pre-owned. They don't care about anything else but that sale.

The industry believes the pre-owned market is killing them. To which I say bullshit, I've been gaming about 17 years and there has ALWAYS been a pre-owned market for games. The industry is still here and doing better than ever as far as I can tell...

Just wait until the Game of the Year edition comes out with all the DLC and at about half the price of buying it on release. If a game doesn't have multiplayer then you don't even need to get it on release, it's not like you'll miss out on the community.

Well I loved Arkham asylum and Arkham city looks even better so yeah, I pre-ordered; wanna fight about it?

It was a holiday for us Muslims in August so I got money from my aunt so I could get another one of my 2011 games that i want. ACR is what I want the most so I bought that myself, used money from aunt to get Uncharted 3, and for some reason my mom wanted to get me a game so she got me Arkham city; kinda out of the blue but hey, I'm not complaining, that means I get all 3 of my 2011 games :D

And I pre-ordered from best buy because I really liked the idea of playing as a redesigned Tim Drake robin plus TWO challenge maps, instead of just one map from gamestop; just seemed like a better deal. I know it's going to be DLC but early access to the the robin pack is better than just getting one map.

It sounds like it's been hyped up a quare bit though I can't really make any formal judgement as I haven't played it. Sure, "Dead Island" looked pretty swell from the majority of its trailers, especially the theatrical one that got everyone going. Awk, I'm not saying it's a terrible game or anything of the sort; it certainly has its flaws and, trust me, plenty of them, but I am currently enjoying it for the most part.

I never pre-order games. Pre-ordering is so lame and just a scam sometimes. My sister's boyfriend was telling me he never pre-orders any more because he did and they just released the content for everyone like 2 months later. Not to mention there really is no reason to pre-order a game ever. If I won't like the game on it's basic content, then I doubt this little bit extra will change my mind. Or if I do like it, the little bit extra won't matter.
Sure, I pre-ordered "Dead Island", went in and got it on the Tuesday after its release and they were completely sold out, despite me pre-ordering it so I definitely agree that there's no point really.

Unless it's special edition and therefore may have some snazzy little nik-naks. Of course, only if you're interested! The pen I got with "Dead Rising 2" is pretty crap quality but the looks/comments one receives upon using it in public is fabulous!

I would say that would be more the case in regards to pre-ordering Special Edition games. Usually that's the only reason I'd generally buy a game brand new or even ask to have one saved over for me unles I really wanted it, like I did with "Dead Island" and the upcoming Tomb Raider game. Mind you, I'll have to brace myself for all these glitches and I think i've already been numbed by the constant story contradictions! That and I sincerely hope this is the last Tomb Raider game that they're going to be bringing out for the most part, lol.

Not sure what happened to the quote there...

Dang it, the only way I can get it in English and for a decent price was to pre-order it online. Looks like no extra content for me until the (not 100% certain) event that it's released as regular DLC. But then again, somehow my copy of Dragon Age: Origins came with bonus extras, so maybe I will get something. I hope I do.
