For those of you (probably most) who don't know of this mod, this is an open world zombie survival mod for the game ARMA 2.

Basically, you start out with almost nothing, just a flashlight and some bandages, the rest you have to scavenge for yourself, without being mauled by zombies or players. It is suggested that you play this game with more than one person, if you want to live.

The gameplay is really difficult to explain, so I will use a story for an example:
I ran around for hours, trying to survive, trying to avoid zombies and get items. Naturally, I was unsuccessful, except for finding an axe to flail at zombies with.
Finally I found another player who had an axe, I came up behind him and, as you do, said "friendly, don't shoot me" repeatedly on my mic. After a bit of talking another guy with a gun ran up behind him, so, as you do, I said "friendly, don't shoot" repetedly. It is a rare find to find someone friendly with a gun.

After a bit of running around, the 3 of us found a fallen, broken helicopter, so we decided to try fix it. This requires about a zillion parts, so naturally we were running all around the town, trying to avoid zombies, looking for parts, unfortunately the first guy who had the axe was felled by a few zombies and didn't make it, but the guy with the guns and I fixed up the helicopter quite a bit.
The guy with the guns gave me a pistol, and we stored some stuff at a nearby bus station, as were storing some items, suddenly another player with a millitary weapon ran up on us, I almost shot him, as he startled me so much. Turned out he was friendly, and we were chatting for a bit about the helicopter when suddenly a car (perfectly in-tact and functioning) appeared infront of us, and the new guy was yelling at us over his mic "GET IN THE CAR AND DRIVE AWAY, YOU HAVE 10 SECONDS" then he started to count down.
Somehow I ended up in the drivers seat, and we managed to drive away just as he got to '2'.
So, what the hell, he may have hijacked our broken helicopter, but he somehow gave us a functioning car instead of shooting us, so what the hell, we figured we'd go to the airport and see if we could scavenge some good items.
My friend took the wheel, and we drove into the distance.

We were passing through a small village when we heard someone calling for us to stop and give them a ride, we contempated it and decided to help the guy, I mean, its not easy when no one helps you.
So the guy sprints up with about 5 zombies chasing him and jumps into the car, we drive away and he says thanks for picking him up. Seems nice enough I thought.
Later on my friend noticed there was a dead zombie on the road, he was in need of bandages so he decided to jump out and check the dead zombie. As he left the vehicle he said 'Don't drive off without me'. Naturally the other guy jumped right into the drivers vehicle and gunned it. While I was going "What the fuck" the driver shot me and threw me out of the car, leaving me to die.
I have no idea what happened to the guy who stole the car, nor my friend, I was dead.
Now, you may wonder what the point to that overly long story was, and I will tell you this:
You will meet 3 types of players in DayZ. The helpful (rare) the insane (rarer) and the psychopath (common).
This makes me seriously worry what people would do in the face of an apoycalypse, real or imagined. But it certainly makes for an interesting game.

The bottom line for this game is, that it is incredibly buggy, the interface is hell, trying to do anything will get you nowhere without having to look up a guide, and even then it is difficult, the game is laggy, there are possible hackers everywhere, but damn, if you stick with it you will walk away with some very interesting stories.

I was searching a town alone with my trusty axe, when suddenly I heard an explosion in the distance, interested I ran to the location which turned out to be a miliray base, I saw 3 armed players and instantly started my 'friendly' chant, they ran up to me, and one demanded I drop my flashlight, so, not to disappoint the man with the gun, I dropped my flashlight and he ran away, so I picked it back up. I started to explore the base carfully, keeping in mind the 3 other players, when suddenly they spotted another player with an axe. They ran up to him and demanded an axe fight, so the guy came running at me, I know not whether he was just doing it because they had guns, or because he wanted to, but I didn't want to fight him, so I ran in circles.
Turns out that that gets boring really quickly even with 3 psychopaths egging him on, so I decided I would just make a run for it, lets just say that ended with me becoming a human sieve.
Moral of the story? Avoid groups of players, especially if they are heavily armed. Chances are they are of the psychopath persuasion.
Captcha: let go
You'll need to do this a lot, to whatever friends you make, to whatever items you lose. It is a sad reality.
