I miss Operation Flashpoint... Used to play that game extensively. Had a shittonne of mods downloaded for it, got pretty good at scripting missions as well - the Mission editor and scripting system was incredibly versatile.

Y'just don't get games like that any more.

So... you can't play as Soviets in this game unless you have a separately bought campaign that isn't included in the digital versions.
Let me label this as "Nationalist crap".
Seems an odd thing to complain about - especially given that the very first expansion to Operation Flashpoint was a Soviet campaign, not to mention the fact that the original game itself (along with it's expansions) actually did give players the ability to play as the Soviets in their own user created missions/campaigns (or, indeed, many free to download missions/campaigns created by others) - which, whilst perhaps not as good as an in built Soviet campaign, is still a damned sight more than you'd get in most other games where Team America (fuck yeah!) is one team, and Russia (booooo!) is the other team.

I'm looking at the recent Calls of Duty when I consider this.

Or Multiplayer, actually, now that I think about it - One could easily be the Soviets in multiplayer.

Meh, to each their own though and you're welcome to your own opinion.

It'd be okay if the Soivet explansion was, you know, available along with the game, but it isn't unless you are willing to get the second-hand retail copies off Ebay or do some serious bargain bin digging. And I don't play multiplayer.

*shrugs*, As I say, you're entitled to your opinion - just as I'm entitled to the opinion that I feel you've somehow taken offence at something which seems rather silly.

To be honest - The game came out in 2001 so I'm actually a little surprised that the game is being made available at all without having to go for 2nd hand CDs off EBay etc. (incidentally, a quick search of Amazon.co.uk reveals that the Game of the Year Edition (which includes the Red Hammer and Resistance expansions) can be obtained for a mere £2.49 (or approximately 151 Roubles, tovarish).

AFAIK Amazon doesn't send VGs to Russia, droog. They didn't a couple of years back.

Aaaah... Lovely memories. Can't quite believe it's 13 years old. Even with the amusing Origami characters you send to their deaths.

While we're giving out meaningless labels, let me label that as the most stupid assumption of the week.

Well, to be fair, there is a point to it. Bohemia Interactive does tend to be a bit mean on the Soviets/Russians in their game, but given that it is a Czeck developer, well... They do say that you should write what you know.
No, it's a normal assumption. Cold War isn't a black and white conflict like WW2. There were no good and bad guys, just two ideologically opposed sides. So I'm right to expect both sides being represented equally.
Krhem! I thought someone would have already corrected this, but nope...

Here's part of the plot summary from Wikipedia:
"Aleksei Guba, a renegade general, is determined to bring down Gorbachev and make himself the next leader of the Soviet Union. Guba commands an army on the island base of Kolgujev. Guba invades nearby Everon, crushing the militia force there, and secretly plans to take the war to the Americans."

So the bad guys are actually not the entire Soviet Army, but a large separate military force (several brigades/regiments) under the command of a hateful warmongering renegade general. Not so "nationalist crap" anymore, right? Even the Red Hammer expansion has you playing the role of a Soviet military soldier (former Spetsnaz) defecting to the resistance after fighting both the resistance and US troops before realizing how evil the leadership behind the Soviet offense on the islands really is.

Oh. Then it's all good.

I'm still wondering why all these "Good Old Reviews" aren't being lumped in with the regular reviews. You can go to "All reviews" on the site, and none of these show up.
