Art for arts sake?

Doing some work on an arts festival currently and one of the many discussions I have been having in my classes is what is art for arts sake and is art for arts sake valid?

Most art was done for art's sake. So yes, it's incredibly valid.

In fact functional art is incredibly out numbered by useless art.
