Nowadays you can't really pick out many genres on their originality, most certainly steroid-fueled space marine shooters, but if they're going to argue about copying they should at least research to find out who copied who.
Honestly, I can tell you the reason right now that THQ and Games Workshop have answers like that prepared, it's because of years of putting up with questions just that stupid from Blizzard fanboiz. I mean if you wanna go REEEEEAAAALLLLLY far back, technically in terms of gameplay GoW is just ripping off RE4.... but that's a sticky slope.Jumplion said:Pft, so? Warhammer was never a third-person shooter before, what does it matter that the franchise has been around longer? I looked at a gameplay footage of it when it first came out and at first glance I thought it looked like some Gears footage, I swear it did. And, as the article pointed out, the fact that they were so quick to pick out the differences does tell you something about it.
Besides, any game that has "SPACE MARINE" clearly plastered on its title is doubtful of really delivering any surprises.
Meh, I can't really blame the guy for comparing Space Marine to Gears of War. I mean, the biggest similarity I can see are the GINORMOUS space armour things that look absolutely ridiculous. Even if WH40K had that stuff in its "lore" or whatever before Gears, that doesn't really help its case either way.Rellik San said:Honestly, I can tell you the reason right now that THQ and Games Workshop have answers like that prepared, it's because of years of putting up with questions just that stupid from Blizzard fanboiz. Well you know, to be fair, when it's a game named after an Army in a game that was developed long before Space Marine came to epitomise any Sci-Fi military force, I think it's allowable. Maybe you should pick up one of the Dan Abnett books and be pleasantly surprised.
Also Inquisitor as a DMC style beat 'em up plox Relic.
Not just Lore... it's been a core part of the GW visual design for 25+ years. Also look at it this way; Space Marine - An interstellar, genetically altered killing machine that wants to split the skulls of anyone who doesn't follow their god and/or isn't human. This is a universe so far on its head, that the good guys are what in most other franchises normally what you are trying to fight.Jumplion said:Meh, I can't really blame the guy for comparing Space Marine to Gears of War. Yup I got that, which is why I recommended one of the novels to ya.Jumplion said:I'm not saying I dislike the WH40K series, just never bothered to get in it. I have been meaning to try one of the RTSs but I haven't been arsed to anyway.
He responded? Where? :OLadette said:I was sure that this was satire, then they guy who wrote the article responded to the comments.....Stupidity does not begin to describe that article.
The problem is, that even though WH40K has never been a TPS, his comparisons are based on the actual style, characters and weapons, which regardless of the fact that it was never a TPS, pre date all of the current games he mentions.Jumplion said:Pft, so? Basically this guy has gone out to say how much stuff Warhammer 40000 has "ripped off" from Gears of War, apparently unaware that 40K has been around longer, and that Relic has been making a conscious effort to differentiate the gameplay from Gears of War.
Besides, any game that has "SPACE MARINE" clearly plastered on its title is doubtful of really delivering any surprises.
By all means, this game could be absolute gold as far as I know. Hell, I freely admit that I've never really gotten into the Warhamemr 40K series, never bothered to check it out. Still, from what I've seen, it doesn't really seem to pull any surprises.
He refers to Chain swords, which are basically swords with chain saw blades to the Lancer bayonet. Since the article is about how it's ripping off Microsofts Gears of War, making this kind of comparison is just silly. The guns are huge and they feature a chainsaw blade that can be used to slice enemies in half, execution style, similar to the ?chainsaw bayonet? of the Gears soldiers.
Wait, what?! As a big fan of both of those series, I fail to see the similarities in concept. One is a throwback to Indianna Jones, Romancing the stone, and all sorts of other pulp adventure stories (Uncharted), and the other is a massive conspiracy story involving an ancient technologically advanced civilization (Assassin's Creed).Chemical Horse said:Similar in concept? Yes. But so are Assassin's Creed and Uncharted.
