As a community, are we becoming too harsh on those who make mistakes?

How about a community charter? An Escapist code of honourable conduct between postees? Something that breaking will not have any consequences other than loosing the respect of the rest of the Escapees and having to earn that respect again? As I understand it the problems you are talking about are not the kinds of things that contravine the rules, but just the general hostility that some people display that can make people feel a bit uncomfortable about joining/getting involved in discussion.
Well now that's the next challenge we face as a community. How do we go about solving these issues? As they seem to have been going on for quite some time now. And yes, seeing as they don't break any rules per se it is hard for the moderators to come down on them. But they shouldn't have to, we as a community should be governing ourselves like that.

I think this topic might be too hard for just you or I to solve ourselves. Prehaps if we start a discussion between some of the more senior members of this site as well as with the moderators we might be able to come up with a community enforced code of conduct?

If I were looking to solve a problem such as this in say, the workforce that is what I would do, form a committee to discuss the possible solutions to the problem and to come up with a code of conduct. Prehaps we should start looking at something such as that?
What we could do is all come up with a code of conduct, which is not actually enforcably binding, and ask a friendly moderator (or Wilson) to post it as an adendum to the posting guide thread.

Something like "These are informal guidlines which the community as a whole has decided are best for making a friendly and interesting posting environment accessable and approachable to all".

Then stuff like "be respectful", "be polite", "Do not take disagreement personally", "If you are a better speller than someone else good for you, we don't need to hear you point that out to everyone"?

Although I make threads rarely, I've never liked those beetches who come to the thread, and for example when someone says "Tell me your favorite movie", and then they answer, "My favorite movie is This Thread Has Been Made: The Movie."

Hahah, very funny! /sarcasm

I want to kill Hate those guys.
No offense to anyone who does it, but seriously. It's kind of annoying to watch, especially when it's a new member.
I'd have to disagree; when it's done right it can bring a smile to all involved. I will however agree that the example you gave was a little blunt and therefore unfunny.
Oh my cheese...
First, it was an example. If you're willing to, you can give me a better example. Also, I told something to someone earlier, go look for it.
Second, what can bring a smile to all involved? The sentence "this has been done before, multiple times?"?
How? Please tell me.

And you agree with who?
I just said that this was a quick example. Not saying it has happened, it was just the first thing that popped to my mind when I thought of an example.
And fyi, why do you think I was even trying to be funny?
I was trying to get a point across, not be funny, m'kay?

Look, if you think we're harsh now, you ain't seen anything. A few months ago, the mods would've ripped most of the new members to shreds considering almost all of them:
1)Insult people and cultures on a regular basis
2)Can't seem to grasp the concept of good grammar and spelling
3)Don't understand basic forum Etiquette
And as a result, most members who joined in December or after said month are total idiots or assholes.
There are beacons of light out there though, I find you, the creator of this thread to be one of them, there's also Dastardos, Vid20, the list isn't a long one, but it's there.
This is very, very, very..... true.

Now I'm not one to blow my own trumpet [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.77737#951238], but there are some examples that are funny. And I can't tell whether your ire at me suggesting that these people do it to be funny is feigned or not.

Uhh, aren't those, like, poems (rsmthn)?
I was talking about examples I could use here to say that I hate DejaNazis.

What often makes me wonder is how many gonzos would we have if posts like "repeat" or "lurn how ta spelt" didn't add to the post count. Use the PM system. Report it. Don't keep bad threads on the front page by repeatedly bumping them with "been done use search button." It does not add anything to the community believe it or not. And it would save everyone so much time if it stopped. We readers wouldn't have to sift through tons of useless posts looking for a discussion and you could spend more time contributing to them instead of just copying and pasting "USE THE SEARCH"

So am I correct in inferring that you want me, one who is defending the DejaNazis, to find you evidence to hate them?

Oh god, now I'm confused. Maybe I said it in the wrong way, but I just wasn't willing to search for any actual examples of a DejaNazi, so I just thought of the lamest.

Those poems aren't actual examples of typical DejaNazi behaviour.

It´s good to see Escapist practising this kind of self-observation. It may actually be good for the community that this thread was created; a chance to reach a mutual understanding. After all, we are not 4chan. If we could just keep our heads, we might learn something and correct what we have erred. I believe we can do this.

And when it comes to my mistakes, please, feel free to correct me. I try to observe myself, but I´m not immune to mistakes, like non of us are.

Typical DajaNazi behaviour you say? I'll give you a hint; look at every other post by this guy [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/profiles/view/the%20monopoly%20guy].

This is what happens when you give people free reign to correct you.

I'm new, but I noticed a certain amount of this. When I joined in November, I could barely see any threads with poor grammar, pointless insults, and a general lack of manners. Any that appeared were swiftly quashed. However I was gone for all of December, and when I came back, the quality of threads had gone down markedly. I feel like most of the people who started out annoying got better after a few days, but those who didn't took a very long time to get banned. I remember seeing that a bunch of longtime members whose posts I really liked had left during the decline that occurred during December. I wonder what caused it.

Another thing which people seem to leap upon as a immoral offence is people who accidently hit the 'enter' button whilst creating a thread, creating a scenario where 'no text' occurs. It does happen quite often sometimes but most of these occurances are mitakes, and the OP feels embarrassed by making them. As a community we should at least give them support and help so they can make their feelings known in a thread rather than attacking them for a simple mistake.

I'm sorry, but I really feel as a community we should be more accomodating to these issues so the Escapist can be for the enjoyment of all, newcomers and experienced posters alike.
I'm with you. The search button rarely works exactly as you'd want it to. Sometimes I can't find a thread that went up earlier in the day by using the search button alone. Good for you for piping up.

That sounds like a very good idea. I'm PM Wilson at a later stage (not now, I'm really pressed for time at the moment, work and sporting commitments in the real world). Most likely tomorrow, about how I would go about setting up a new thread inviting members of the community to referendum their ideas and if the moderators would actively contribute or merely help us with the ideas we come up with as a group.

Thank you for your support in this issue.

I personally detest deja-nazis. If the thread has been done, then don't post on it. I am only a grammar nazi when attacking someone else's point when they are being hostile.
