The engineers in Red Alert 3. So when the game was released, engineers were detectable by the opponent, not just by seeing them in person, but by a transmission that told you whenever an engineer appeared in your covered area of the map. That already made them absolutely pathetic.

In the latest patch they've actually decided to make engineers have a several second delay when capturing constructions, in which they are vulnerable. I couldn't be more angry with this game right now, I'm actually going to stop playign until they realise how bloody stupid they're being and take this out.

Anyone else with me on this?

It's a strategy so you don't play one you can just train one and use one if you want. But they basically allow you to capture neutral or enemy buildings.

That how little I knew about this game. That does sound like a pretty stupid update.

So your job is to protect them?

The people you are fighting have the same weakness.

Tell me about it. In Red Alert 2 Engineers instantly captured buildings and were only detectable by the player.

Yeah, both players now have this weakness, but I still don't understand the point. They don't have any offensive or defensive abilities. They just capture buildings, and they're slow. If they take several seconds to capture buildings, your opponent has time to do something about it even if they don't have any defense.

well i am NOT going to play RA3, because EA sucks and is the devil and blah blah blah blah. but IIRC the traditional engineer thing involved APCs. preferably of the subterranean variety. anyone without at least ONE unit protecting their base is clearly a moron. i mean.. really. wait, are they still stopped by walls (did they take out walls in 3?)

That's worthless. Man, I used to love Engineers. You capture the enemy's construction yard when they only have one and it's game over. Then again, I play Generals mostly, so I'm used to no Engineers.

They did not take out walls, and egineers still can't get passed them.

It's to stop the good ol' engineer rush.
That is, to stop you rushing in say, 15 engineers, capturing all worthwhile buildings and selling them before your oppenent has any real chance at retaliating. Even with the delay engineers are among the most useful units in the game, probably more useful than any other infantry if used correctly.

Also if you have a few they become really easy to defend, you gunna shoot at the engies or the flack troopers beating the crap through your barracks?

EH?!

What the heck would they do that? Were Engineers really that much of a balance issue for multiplayer?

Going off on a tangent; this thread reminds me a little of C&C3: Kane's Wrath. The GDI got spilt into 3 factions, and one of those three had engineers with pistols (they were still pretty damn weak though.)

Alot of games lately get an update that changes the gameplay a little or have a sequal were they change it for the worst! I am so with you on this.

Well they probably did it out of balance concerns. Using engineers has always been a powerful strategy. Having a full APC of engineers appear in the middle of your base and take it over instantly really sucked. You can still use the man-cannon APCs to launch engineers behind their base and take over all their power plants, then rush your tanks in while their power is down. Or something like that. Learn and adapt. Many wars have claimed stodgy old commanders who were set in their ways and could not learn the ways of modern warfare.

Besides, I've never understood how a single engineer 'takes over' a building anyhow. I mean, wouldn't there be personnel in the building who would, you know, shoot him?

I guess you guys are right :( But I still hold dear memories of Red Alert 2 Engineers. I remember when me and my friend Luke spent over an hour convincing Jamie to stop playing WoW and play something else for a change. Red Alert 2. When we finally got him to play with us, I engineer rushed his Construction Yard and sold it in less than a minute.

I may be off on a tangent here, but isn't the engineer rush avoided by walls? Are walls more expensive in RA3 than in RA2?

That's a very good point actually.

To be honest I think they should make it an option on games rather than a forced update.

For me, Red Alert 3 was too much like the classic Red Alert 2, so I never bought it.
In what way is that bad?!
I already have Red Alert 2, is why.
My drive literally shattered Red Alert 2. I'm not sure if it was over-worked or something but I was half way through installing (so it wasn't incorrectly inserted) and BANG! I open my drive later on and it's in hundreds of pieces.

I also lent out my Allies disc and have no idea where it is now.
