Randomly lost my windows bar, menu, application launch bar, whathaveyou, etc, etc.

Don't have a pop up menu any more or a means to monitor my netbook's battery. I'm very, very new to linux so some help figuring out why it randomly vanished with all my quick launch buttons would be appreciated.

I'm running Peppermint with the latest Ubunto distro thingy.

Thanks.
I'd really appreciate anyone who can walk me through getting the black windows bar back. It really did make my netbook convenient.

Unfortunately, the process of tracing the source of error and fixing it will be considerably longer than simply reinstalling Peppermint. It's without any doubt dick move, but it's efficient. If you assigned separate /home partition during installation, then your settings will be preserved (just don't format /home partition).

Also, since Peppermint OS is based on Ubuntu, there should be "UPGRADE TO..." option during installation. It should replace all configuration with clean one.

...

Alright, after I've backed up all the information on here I need to keep how will I go about re-instillation?

Though, I suppose I could badger my friend into helping me again I lose nerd cred for running to him for help. Anonymously on the net? My ego isn't important! :D

Still, it is annoying that after a year of being fine it would just vanish.

I'll bet my hairy ass that it's either bad repositories or wrong gfx drivers.
I had similar cases and reached three conclusions :
- updating Linux = russian roulette
- separate partition/disc for all vital data is not optional
- one must ALWAYS be ready to reinstall Linux

Seriously, it's fun to work with Linux, learn it, administer it, but to play Sherlock Holmes just because it refuses to work just like that, without any warning ?
It's simply not worth time and effort in my opinion. Life's too short. :)

BTW :
Peppermint on Netbook ? Why not Meego ?

Never heard of them. What would be the benefits of either one of those?

[sub][sub]Good thing I mainly use this thing for internet shenanigans and word processing.[/sub][/sub]

Peppermint OS and similar distributions CAN be installed on mobile devices.
Those distros were MADE for mobile devices.

Just look at the screens please. :)
