Those of you who are into robots, as well as most people in general, will be aware of the little Japanese robot, ASIMO.

This little guys is famous as one of the world's best walking robots, as well as the only robot in the world capable of running like humans.

However, recently, I watched a TV show which featured some of ASIMO's more clever aspects. These included his ability to recognise specific people, his ability to distinguish inanimate objects from each other (making judgements based on their shape, size etc) as well as his programming to greaat people with handshakes and so on.

I would like to think that, if I met one in real life, I would treat it (don't know if I should refer to ASIMO as "he" or "she" right now) lke a person. shaking it's hand, asking how it was etc.

How about you guys?

Would you treat a robot like ASIMO like a thing, or as a person?

I'd treat it as a toy. Sort of like a little baby perhaps. You know, shaking its hand because I think it's cute and funny.

Probably treat it like a person to a certain extent, though how much I'd be able to keep thinking that way I don't know. It'd be kind of weird being around a thing that greet people, yet doesn't have any independent thought.

It's expensive and we have a lot of pets around he might accidentally harm. I'd probably wind up leaving him in his box and only taking him out occasionally to show to people.
