Below is a video that will bore the hell out of some, creep the hell out of others, and baffle the hell out of nearly all.

"OK... what the hell was that?"

Simple, my friends. You have glimpsed the world of ASMR.

ASMR, or "Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response", is a recently-documented condition that many people experience. Essentially, upon finding a "trigger" while in a relaxed state, one may suddenly have chills shoot down their spine, causing a pleasant buzz. A natural high, if you will.

There has been virtually no research done for ASMR, and it never was thought to be a thing until the internet came along, when people began to realize that other people had the same reactions to ASMR stimuli as them. Research on the phenomena is underway, but it's still so new that we don't have real results yet.

Common triggers are whispering, soft talking, tapping, stroking, seeing people concentrating on tasks, or grooming.

Naturally, as with all things slightly odd yet pleasurable, there's a huge batch of people on YouTube who obsess with it.

<youtube=24VtH7pZWWE>

That's Maria, the queen of YouTube ASMR. She has over 60,000 subscribers and 21,000,000 video views.

"Oh, lacktheknack, I went for all this time thinking you WEREN'T a perv," you say. But that's just it. You see, the community insists, as a whole, that there's nothing sexual about it. Erotic ASMR role-plays exist, yes, but then so does erotic fanart of everything. I've never seen an entire internet community collectively denounce accusations of "You're getting off to this" before. They seem to need to, as the videos are regularly flagged for being inappropriate, even though they aren't.

It's a very odd stigma. As one person said, "If caught, it's easier to explain why you were watching porn compared to explaining why you're watching ASMR videos."

<youtube=PgJQSetoalk>

Case in point.

So I ask you, Escapist. What do you think of this phenomena? Is it creepy and disturbing? Relaxing? Or do you feel a rush of ASMR yourself?

Discuss.

I was certainly surprised to find out I wasn't the only one to get these reactions. These days I do follow quite a few ASMR YouTube channels and watch a few videos every night. Incidentally I'm also just an all around audiophile so finding a wealth of videos full of interesting sounds and soundscapes was pretty great.

Obligatory KYM article . . .

Anyway, it's a weird sensation. It doesn't even have to be sound, for me.
I don't think it's really a "meme". If anything, I bet the meme factory that is /b/ would take one look and go "uhhhhhhhhh" before turning attention elsewhere.

Also fuck, they really need to legalize weed if people are resorting to tapping on tins to get high

Dunno if it says anything about my stress levels, but I couldn't watch more than a minute and a half of the first video, two minutes and fifteen seconds of the second video, and a minute of the third video before I began feeling aggravated/anxious/annoyed.

Granted, I am usually a very tense person and I'm not sure how long it's been since I've truly been in a state of mind where I would comfortably say that I was "relaxed".

Thank you for making this thread, I had no idea what it was. Hell I thought I was going crazy. I don't get it from anything besides someone concentrating upon something. My brain is picky about it. The other person has to be seriously thinking about something and I have to know the answer to it. So basically it only works on puzzles. Still its nice knowing that this is a 'thing'

I also wonder what percentage of the population feels ASMR

Isn't this just the power of suggestion? Word association, imprinting, conditioned response like Pavlov's dog?
Doesn't seem that special, but it could be very useful.
And what exactly are these videos suggesting? That you'll get a special tingle from watching them?

Nope. Not only is the response already there, and difficult to "learn", it actually diminishes if you overdo it.

You don't get the sensation. Dawwwwww.
Nope, nothing. DOES THAT MEAN I AM SOME SORT OF GOD?
No, it places you with many other poor souls who also can't feel it. Saddens me a bit, really.

A "natural high" could be very therapeutic.
It could be, and it is. My point was these aren't Power of Suggestion videos.
Ever be listening to a song and you hear a part that makes you tingle? It's a similar thing in my experience, but more sustained and of a lower intensity.

Neat. I'd never heard of this before now and I are now a sad panda for I do not, and likely cannot, fully comprehend it. Cursed be my curiosity, that hellish seductress that leads me down dark paths and drives me to torment and rage against the walls of forbidden experience, grinning at my inability to fulfill that most primal of desires: the thirst for knowledge.
...

I'm sorry. I was feeling a little poetic.

I'll just let myself out.

Huh, none of that stuff worked for me. I'm not entirely sure what I'm supposed to be feeling here, from your description it sounds a bit like when someone scratches me behind the ear when I'm comfortable. I feel insanely happy and occasionally start purring (and no, I am not a furry). It probably says a lot about us that when someone says 'Someone does something to me and I start feeling happy' we immediately make it dirty.

Felt an itty bitty tingle crawling around the back of my head,Id describe it as a lesser version of what I usually get when listen to really good mucic,Id definatly say there's an intresting bit of science behind whatever's going on.
