Hello fellow Escapists, it's time to talk (fairly) serious bizniss. Lately I've become very interested in the subject of Asperger's Syndrome, because alot of the symptoms described pertain directly to my life. In fact, it seems to explain or connect to a lot of what is considered "nerd" behavior.

Looking back I realize I had a huge problem with socializing as a kid, and would become obsessed with certain topics and go on endlessly about them. It wasn't that I had trouble talking, it was that I had trouble structuring a back-and-forth conversation. Now I'm in college, and I've gotten much better about controlling my habits, but things I should be able to pick up on naturally (verbal/emotional cues, facial expressions, etc.) only come to me after I've studied them intellectually. I can have a good time socializing, but I do feel some anxiety going into almost any social situation, and I feel like I have to approach it tactically. I know, it's weird, but it's who I am.

Asperger's doesn't seem to be a huge problem though. It's led to a little alienation, but I've been able to direct a huge amount of attention into several scientific topics, nutrition, and exercise (and video games, I am on this forum after all!), that I feel I would have ignored otherwise.

So TL;DR version - Do any of you suspect you have Asperger's Syndrome or have any of you actually been diagnosed with it? If so, how has it affected your life, how do you treat it, etc.?

Please.

Don't be that guy :D

Don't be the guy who self diagnoses with Asperger's just because you have a few of the symptoms.

I'm not self diagnosing anything - I see enough similarity in the symptoms that I'm going to get a professional opinion. My parents had taken me to therapists/psychiatrists when I was a lot younger because they expected something similar, but going to a bunch of doctors freaked me out too much so I stopped.

Really I was just spilling out a few thoughts and wanted to know if anyone had any experiences with it.

It's okay, I wasn't being that hard on you :D

You spend enough time on the internet and you get sick of people with social shortcomings blaming those shortcomings on a self diagnosed medical condition.

Apologies if I came across as harsh.

Aspergers has become a very commonplace disorder for people in the geek community to self-diagnose with due to some overlap with run of the mill social awkwardness. From what I understand of Aspergers, it's basically an offshoot of Autism. We might not be talking about out and out Rain Man levels of social dysfunction, but it goes way past "sometimes I'm awkward in social situations". I suspect if you actually had Aspergers you'd have experienced significantly more disruption than what you're describing.

Firstly, don't self-diagnose, as others have said (ok, the OP is going to a professional, but there will likely be others reading this).

Secondly, if you are diagnosed with it, do feel free to diagnose others as having it though, when discussing it with them. In that there's a big overlap with "normal" people, misdiagnosis should work both ways.

Seriosuly, though, a diagnosis helps, people tend to get less pissed off at things they understand.
