I only got around to playing Black Flag as a result of it being free through the 'Games With Gold' promotion, having missed out on Assassin's Creed III. For the most part, I really enjoyed the game. It had its ups and downs: free-running still feels clunky at times, and the stealth element plays out very strangely, but the game was pretty good.

Naval combat was entertaining although at times artificially extended the game's length. One of the most notable examples was early in the game, where you're advised to upgrade the Jackdaw. Up until this point you've had very little reason to upgrade the ship, so you're spending ages pursuing ships for minor amounts of metal.

In truth, it was worth doing just because you could ignore the advice to upgrade the Jackdaw after this point, for the most part. The ship is in rude good health by then, and can take on everything up to a Man o' War.

My relationship with the Assassin's Creed series has been patchy. I never completed the first game, really liked the second, enjoyed Brotherhood, accepted Revelations, and totally forgot about the rest. Some day I intend to actually complete III, Rogue and Unity. Oddly I've heard that Rogue is a better game than Unity despite probably having had the smaller budget.

I have a feeling a resolution to the whole story with Abstergo is going to be quite far off still.
